“Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark.”
ANything by Kate DiCamillo will always be 5 stars. Great class read aloud with deep discussions!
This began as a read-aloud with Molly... it got a little dark for her taste. I think she'll be ready for it in another year or two. I finished on my own and I appreciated that the author didn't dumb things down for the elementary audience - showing kids that she trusts they are smart enough to learn big vocab and to handle dark situations, with the end of course being love and bravery triumphing evil, light shining in dark places. :-)
I enjoyed DiCamillo's book Because of Winn-Dixie, and I've been meaning to read this for a long time, esp. when it won the Newbery. It was a sweet, charming fairy tale spun with humor and warmth. I think it would be a lovely read-aloud for 3rd - 4th graders, maybe even 2nd.
This is such an interesting book that intertwines multiple different stories of different characters. It has great underlying themes that are helpful to children and adults both. I especially enjoyed the underlying theme of light and the importance of it both in humans life and in animals. There is great joy in light and love and this book surely shows that and brings that theme to your attention.
Interesting characters and fun quick read.
Bryant and I are reading this one together and we're almost finished.
He loved this book, and we had fun reading it together. I really liked the last part in which the author writes:
"Do you remember when Despereaus was in the dungeon, cupped in Gregory the jailer's hand, whispering a story in the old man's ear? ...
"Stories are light," Gregory the jailer told Despereaux.
Reader, I hope you have found some light here."
After rereading it with him I decided to up it one star since he enjoyed it so much. I look forward to seeing how the film compares to the book.

Rating subject to change because I don't remember the book much....
Not my cup of tea. I didn't enjoy the writing style, the story line, or the characters (except for Miggery Sow).
I love the voices narrator Graeme Malcolm uses, but a lot of times I could barely hear him.

SOOO adorable! Love the story about being true to yourself and being brave no matter what. Love the characters and the tone and the whole thing. Wish I could say something clever and fabulous about this book beyond LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT.
