The writing is well executed, as you would expect, but I was disappointed in the ending. I did enjoy the way she built the relationship between Lord John and his brother Hal, and the rest of the family.

The whole plot was rather contrived, as it turned out. Or perhaps it's that the story thread with the mystery wasn't woven tightly enough with the thread with the relationship. The relationship thread climaxed dramatically, but that just emphasized the anticlimactic denouement--and I'm not entirely sure it was intended to be the denouement.

We get to find out a lot more about Lord John's background.

These books are different in style to the Clare/Jamie storyline and some of the weaker scenes in this were when the 2 interlinked which was a shame.

This is probably my favourite of the Lord John stories - I mean, there's a tragic love story, more political intrigue and a more tricky romance. It really is kind of like great, long fanfic with tropes I really enjoy.

I'm still not sure if I'm loving these Lord John books or not. I think I'm finding them rather like an assignment I need to complete an essay. A necessary component to the world of Outlander.

I enjoy LJ and his relationships with his family, particularly with his brother Hal and Mother, but I'm not sure if that's enough to lock my interest on a character that isn't Jamie or Claire.

I thought the relationship with Percy was interesting and enjoyed the descriptions of war and army camp life. I am a big fan of Tom, he's endearing.

I'll continue reading them, as they are interesting, but I have a long TBR list and the next one might have to spend a little time on it so I can get through some of the others in the line.

as usual, Diana Galbadon delivers a superb read. Not for the weak or squeamish (or prejudice). Excellent-highly recommend it, although it helps if you've read the entire Outlander series. Very detailed with lots of history of the 7 years war.
