What Lies Between Us
HD Carlton - 5 Stars
Oh. My. Gosh. Echo and Link are something else. This whole story had me captivated and completely sucked in from the beginning. And that's exactly what this story is - the beginning. There's so much to unpack and you're working to figure it out from page one. The haunted aspect on top of everything else gives this intense element to go alone with everything else that's going on. I am so ready for whats more to come between these two. Their story is nowhere near finished and it's going to be an amazing, exciting, slightly terrifying ride. It's one I can't wait to experience.

This anthology is jam packed with a whole load of morally ambiguous alpha characters who are not afraid to cross quite dubious lines to get what or who they want by any means necessary. There’s a whole lot of grey and maybe a little bit (lot) of black areas. It’s fair to say I loved every minute of this book. While some are short stories there are also books that end in a cliffhanger and whet your appetite for the rest of the story in the full book. This review just focuses on one story Damaged Heats by C Hallman and JL Beck.
This story is linked to the Moretti Family and does focus on a situation that first came to light in Broken Beginning’s. You don’t need to read this book but I think it would give you a greater understanding of the characters and history if you did.
This is Felix and Julie’s story and my what a story. You get lost the absolute heartbreak that Julie has been subjected to and how Felix though a very dominant man he does show a different side to himself to Julie. He’s patient and caring when she needs it but also pushes her so she doesn’t wallow and get lost in the past. Julie is fragile but she’s also very impulsive at times but the overarching theme is despite what she has endured Julie is most definitely a survivor. While Felix can be a hard and heartless man to others he’s definitely not that to Julie and will do all that he can to help her and protect her. These are both strong characters who have great chemistry. I also loved his brother Markus and Fallon’s cameo as well, this definitely enhanced the storyline.
I loved the epilogue at the end but I hope this gets turned into a full novel sooner rather than later. But a word of caution be aware there are very dark themes in this story and the book in general so be aware of your triggers. This is a very short read compared to the other books in the Moretti series but that’s the reason it’s in the anthology, all in all a very good read…now I can’t wait for the full book of this particular story.

What Lies Between Us by HD Carlton
I’ve only read this one so far and omg it was so good. HD writing MM romance is a thing I didn’t know I needed. It has her trademark elements of mystery, paranormal activity, dark tones, and hot, hot sexiness, and I would give anything for a full length Echo and Link novel. It’s almost like a Veronica Mars set in Blackchurch, and honestly that is inspired and brilliant

HD Carlton’s - What Lies Between Us
What Lies Between Us is a dark academia, MM novella that will be a full length novel later on. Echo’s infamous around school for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Leighton, though he was never convicted and maintains his innocence. He’s a total pariah around school and no one hates him more than Leighton’s twin, Link. But, Echo’s always had feelings for Link and when the two end up talking, Link’s not so sure that his convictions about Echo are true.
Ahhhh, I’m so mad I have to wait for the full novel. This was so good, the tension and build-up was so good and since this is a novella, we only get one *scene* but boy, was it good. As usual, the plot and suspense are just as intriguing.

After being rescued, she ends up being taken in by Felix. Felix keeps telling himself that he cannot fall in love with her. I cannot wait to get my hands on their full length novel as soon as it is released!
