Sloat takes the time-travel trope and makes it something newer, more interesting. This was a quick, enjoyable read. The pacing never seems to lag, and the characters are vibrant (although, okay: I admit that Emme took some time to grow on me with her stubbornness and too-cool-for-the-era attitude, but I did find myself invested in her story).

All in all, this is a fun escape for a little while... even if we can't totally escape like The Librarians. Oh, but how awesome would that be! I'll be reading more from her for sure.

Like combo of magic and time travel

Mostly a love story, which was ok. Some detail about clothing styles and mores of yesteryear. I like more laughs, though. But being short, it worked for me.

Fun read.

Time-travel plus portal fantasy -- yes! Fun read. Great escape after a long day. Enjoyed the concept of the librarian "travelling" to preserve important moments in history.

This was definitely not a “love at first chapter” book for me, but as the story developed, I found myself becoming more and more engaged and intrigued by the plot and characters. The writing at the beginning was a little awkward, but as the story went on, it grew to be beautifully written. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and was really excited to find a unique idea. Excited to read the sequel!

I chose this rating because I loved the storyline and how Sloat wrote time traveling, it was fluid and flawless. I appreciated the romance aspect and how both relationships Emme is part of grew and changed and evolved. This was a lovely historical fiction with a twist. The only reason I rated it as 4 stars instead of 5 because it doesn't set up for a second book in my opinion.

The MOST boring book I ve read. The ML's only traits is the fact that he is hot. The main girl dant opened up to ppl bt falls fr a dude because he treats her normally and then she falls again for the same reason 😭 like have some standards other than hot and a human being!
Anywho if u want a story that feels bland this is the one fr u

Emme has one remaining member of her family, her elderly grandmother who raised her. As Emme goes about her life in California, she gets a life changing call. She needs to go back to Maine, her grandmother is dying, leaving her small town library to Emme and extracting Emme's promise that she will read the books under the floorboards and run the library for the rest of her life. Emme holds a secret gift, the ability to travel into books, specifically to go back in time and record important events of influential people's lives. As Emme falls hopelessly for her first assignment, she enters a crazy whirlwind of discovering herself, her purpose and the true parameters for her gift. Will Emme stay at the library and continue her mission? Or will she find a new keeper for it and continue her previous life plans.

I am a sucker for books about books. So of course this made my Indie TBR list. Emme did not disappoint in the fellow bookworm category. But even more than the intrigue of a book about books, I loved the mystery. How both we and Emme didn't know the whole story and got snippets of facts at a time. Until Christy had mercy on us and had Emme travel through a book that would give her the answers. I actually thought Christy did a fantastic job of knowing when to withhold information and when to give it.

I have so many questions. However most of my questions are more about Lockheart and why he chose time travel, how he selected Emme's great grandmother to try it out on etc. I'm hoping the next two books in the series shed some light on it, but that's mostly me overthinking things and the story will continue to be incredible with or without that information.

Mediocre at best

I only gave this two stars because it had an interesting premise and didn’t have spelling errors. The characters are lame and one dimensional, the plot is slow and shallow, even the romance is forced and insipid. Not a book I’m proud of finishing but I couldn’t just give up.
