Ugh! Such a promising idea but failed to deliver. I was drawn into the idea of a magic library, time travel, and family secret.

I did not get the story I was promised.

The writing is all over the place - inconsistencies, disjointed, and poorly developed. None of the characters were likable: Emmeline was whiny, self-absorbed, immature, and kind of annoying, especially about her yoga pants. The other characters are equally unremarkable, and their dialogue seemed stilted and adolescent at times.

Man! I really wanted to like this book.

The ending made the book basically pointless.

The Librarian was so good! Yes, it had some boring parts but it was still enjoyable to me! It probably helps because it was an audio and it made work fly by.

So in this book you meet Emma. Her grandmother owns this book store and wants Emma to one day run it. Of course Emma doesn't want that - she want's to a college far away and live out her dreams. Well, until her grandma ends up in the hospital and things don't look good for her. Nope, her grandma dies and Emma has to take over the book store.

Emma was kind of a lovable character but she annoyed me a whole lot. It's like her decisions to do things just irritated the shit out of me. The whole time travelling aspect was enjoyable but it wasn't better than some of the other time travelling books I've been reading lately.

The whole book time travelling thing was interesting but Emma not wanting to keep the bookstore EVEN after her grandma died and told the super important family secret was just annoying to me. I get that she wanted her old life back before everything hit the fan.. but come on! Book jumping through time sounded awesome!

Overall, I liked listening to the audio book while at work because it made time fly by. However, I probably wouldn't have read the kindle version for fun. The ending was underwhelming and a disappointment. It also had boring parts that didn't hold my interest. Oh, and if the main character didn't annoy me then I would've rated it higher.

It had potential to be really good but I didn't like the instant love. Twice might I add! No character building or any growth in their behavior or personality at all. I really liked the concept of the book just not how it was executed.

I felt it was slow going at first, and things weren’t really explained about what Emme was supposed to be doing until close to halfway through, and later, but it ended well.

Life altering and beautiful

I almost cried during the first 30 pages. I felt the emotions since I lost my great grandma this year. I think this was very beautifully written. It felt like I was in a different time, the book sucked you in. I've had dreams about escaping inside a book and The Librarian fulfilled that dream. It also shows that our actions have consequences. I really liked it.

I just couldn't get into this book. I caught myself picking about the plot and how the story was progressing. I've read too many other time travel books done well to have continued with this one.

I loved this book so much. I don’t usually feel stuff when I read books. I feel connected to the story but I don’t usually connect with my emotions. This book did that for me.

Christy Sloat’s writing is impeccable and I loved every sentence I read. It had the rhythm of a song and there were a bunch of good, quotable lines. Her writing brought the story to life and I felt like I was part of the story, like I was right alongside Emme as she travelled through the books.

There was a good balance of tension and description and we got to learn about the science/magic of The Librarians in a way that didn’t feel like it dumped everything on you. The entire story had an amazing flow, both because of the plot and the author’s writing.

I also found myself loving the characters as I read the story. I got to watch Emme develop and her character change throughout the story and that helped me connect to her character more. Each of the characters that we met were unique and had flaws. The dialogue that the characters had with each other was realistic and I felt like I knew each one well enough to assign them a voice or accent while I was reading.

Overall, this was a truly magical book that I definitely recommend to people who like romance or the idea of entering a book or just readers in general. I’m usually not a big romance fan but this story tugged at my heart with how it was written and portrayed. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

In case you want to see some of the quotes I highlighted in the book, here you go! (Some of these are kind of spoilers but they only make sense in the context.)

“One minute you are living and dreaming of your future and the next you’re living someone else’s dream.”

“I was doing what I never did, letting a guy take over my thoughts. I was letting him inti my high brick walls that surrounded my heart.”

“I knew that my love for him was real, tangible. But our love wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“He never truly loved me. He was merely infatuated with me. I was only a girl he thought he loved. The one time fling. The girl who took his virginity and made him see pleasure for one night. I was not the love of his life. I was the fool then.”

“I placed my hand on my beating chest and realised my heart was no longer broken.”

“In life we have small moments and we have a lot of them. Those small moments are what define us as human beings. They can break us, yes, but it’s how we rebuild ourselves after that makes the difference.”

I chose this rating because I loved the storyline and how Sloat wrote time traveling, it was fluid and flawless. I appreciated the romance aspect and how both relationships Emme is part of grew and changed and evolved. This was a lovely historical fiction with a twist. The only reason I rated it as 4 stars instead of 5 because it doesn't set up for a second book in my opinion.

Interesting premise. The love story is a bit weak and rushed. And the historical aspects are not as rich as I prefer. Overall, a decent read.
