This book was way more fun than I was expecting it to be!

I put off reading this one for a long time because I was sceptical of the idea of a story about Greek gods happening in the modern world, but it was actually great! I will definitely continue reading the rest of the series.

The story was fun, the characters were cute, and there was lots of spice with never a dull moment.

I struggled with how many stars to give it. It was exactly what I wanted/needed at the time. It was fluffy and also steamy and it didn't require much brainpower to read. (i.e. I didn't have to make a character list or memorize a map or magic system just to understand what was going on). However, I do feel like something was lacking in the writing/story that I can't quite put my finger on. My lack of emotional connection to the main character ultimately made me decide on 4 stars. If the other reviews are any indication... I suspect, Hades' POV won't disappoint in that regard.

This was a fantastic retelling of hades x Persephone
I absolutely loved it!!!

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ 45%. Grammatical errors around mid-book felt like reading in broken English. Story seemed ok but not fantastic. Expected Hades to be more morally grey.

A Touch of Darkness is a Hades and Persephone retelling. In this version, Persephone is trying to live as a mortal and work as a journalist. One night, she is talked into going to a night club that God's frequent. She finds her self playing a game with Hades and gets locked into a bet. One where Persephone must bring life to the Underworld or forever lose her freedom. The only problem when Persephone touches plants they wither and die.

I'm a big fan of Persephone and Hades story and have loved other retellings like Lore Olympus but for me this one didn't do it for me.

I didn't like the journalist part. You would think that after having several relations with Hades, Persephone would be like, "Hey I am probably not the person to write this. It's a conflict of interest." I also didn't kind the spice scenes very believable. Persephone was a virgin prior to meeting Hades and it doesn't really come off that way. Their relationship also seems to be purely a sexual thing. There are very little scenes where they do couple things, sweet things that build a relationship. The book quickly lost its plot and became all about the smut. Which don't get me wrong I love a good smutty standalone but this is a seven book series so will we just continue to get spice and no plot for 6 more books about the same two people. The other problem is the spice felt like it was more about quantity than quality. Makes me hesitant to continue the series. The ending was also not my favorite. It felt very How to Lose a Guy in Days or any other mediocre romcom from the early 2000's.

I did think the way they mixed God's and mortals was interesting and trying to put a modern spin on it. I also liked how we still got to see Persephone grow and discover some independence.
