A good mix of fantasy, political intrigue, and swoon. I would read the sequel. Recommended for fans of Mercedes Lackey, Tamora Pierce, and Cinda Williams Chima.

This book definitely feels very YA in how it’s written, as I have definitely read more compelling fantasy books, but this was still an enjoyable read.
A few of the twists were predictable, but other parts stood out as well-written world building paragraphs, or passages of text that described a dark or morbid event that sent a shiver down my spine.

3.5 stars. I'm glad I read Ninth House first, because if I'd read this first, I doubt I'd have sought out the author's other works. It's not bad, it's just cliche and predictable. The writing is reasonably good, but not up to the high bar set by the Alex Stern books. Part of the difference is that this is YA, and that audience isn't so familiar with common story patterns, plus the plot is just simpler.
This book was actually SO GOOD! I enjoyed it alot! I would give it 5 stars but i won't cause I'm hoping the next book will be better.
I didn't expect this book to be good for some reason and refused to read it but when the Netflix show came out and then it was CANCELLED

It was fine. I do not get the hype and why people are obsessed and how it got a Netflix show, but hey, good for Leigh Bardugo.
I do not like Mal and I do not understand him as a love interest.
I thought I liked Genya, but then…ya know, betrayal.
Botkin was about the only Ravkan I legitimately liked in this book.
Watching the show before having read this made the twists WAY less impactful 😭
Okay, I went back through my buddy read notes and there were some good gems about embracing who you are and stepping into your power, so I upped it to 3.5.
