3.85 AVERAGE

absolute brick but it went quickly

this took me back to being 16 and silent screaming over sarah dessen boys in my bedroom.

this had some characters saying problematic things about divorce, dissociative identity disorder and the way women look.

but i enjoyed myself otherwise

unhauling because i don't have the space for books that don't wow me

What Happened to Goodbye is my second Sarah Dessen book. I read That Summer which was also about divorce and which was, coincidentally, also taking place in Lakeview. If I were to choose a favorite between these two books, What Happened to Goodbye would be the easy choice. This book is about McLean who after years of pretending to be someone else regains, reclaims and finds the answer to the question of who she is, not who she is supposed to be.

I admire the author’s ability to write fascinating characters. I became attached to all of them. McLean was, relatable in a weird type of way. I really liked her new friends and even the employees at Luna Blu. I also loved the romance even if it was a minor part of this story.

I overall really enjoyed this book. It gave me this happy feeling of excitement and of nostalgia. And I hope one day I’ll complete my newfound goal of reading all of Sarah Dessen’s books.

Not memorable and just generally average. Read it if you like teenage family/friends drama and a touch of boyfriend troubles.

What Happened to Goodbye is a real chart climber in my book. My fist venture into the world of Sarah Dessen began with The Truth About Forever and ever since no other Dessen book has been able to beat it as my favorite, but I think this has. I absolutely LOVED this book! Once I started I couldn't put it down.

Mclean--I love her name--is such an endearing character. From the very first page I was drawn to her--her personality, her life, and her relationships with others. I was so enthralled by her story and couldn't stop reading as she worked through her emotions towards her mother and found herself.

Some great points:

1. The characters were so real and I loved them all. My all time favorite is Deb--she was crazy but in the greatest way. She was just one surprise after another and genuinely sweet. And I have to mention Dave--who wouldn't want him to be their 2a.m?

2. Seeing old faces, so to speak. It was awesome to revisit characters and places from other books--like hearing about "Gerv-the-Perv"(a.k.a Gervais from Lock and Key) and seeing Heidi and Thisbe and the Last Chance Cafe(Along for the Ride).

Overall, What Happened to Goodbye has a lot to love about it, but to put it simply...this book is a fantastic read! Sarah Dessen has written another hit that doesn't disappoint.

Aku membaca buku Sarah Dessen yg kupunya sesuai thn publikasi edisi aslinya. Sejauh ini What Happened to Goodbye yg paling gk aku suka. Sebenarnya Along for The Ride aku kurang suka background story nya, orangtua yg bercerai.

This was just so dumb. I normally like Sarah Dessen. It was too repetitive with the discussion of how she changes her name at each location. Also both of her parents seem to be total jerks a and self centered. Did her dad have some sort of anger problem?!

this was a super great summer read. unfortunately it was a lot less romance centered than i anticipated, it touched on many great topics including identity and family. though it was a large book, it was still a fairly quick read. sarah dessen does not disappoint:)

I liked this one, but not as much as some of Sarah's other books. 3.5!

I REALLY LIKE SARAH DESSEN.

Sometimes, I forget that. Even as I’ve been rereading her books this year. Sometimes, you get That Summer or Dreamland or The Truth about Forever. A disappointment.

But then! Then! Sometimes you get Just Listen. Actually...up until this point that was the only definitively fun one out of this reread so far.

UNTIL THIS POINT. Because What Happened to Goodbye is another Sarah-Dessen-at-her-best type of deal.

Summery vibe. Cute love interest. Family drama that comes to a Disney-esque happily-ever-after comforting solution. A group of friends featuring strong female friendships. And, as always, a sort of meh teenage girl protagonist who goes through a lot and comes out the other side character developed, like a factory but with emotional breakdowns and crying jags instead of mysterious machines.

A lot of the fun of Dessen books comes down to the details. Parents’ jobs; particulars of the familial drama; whether the book takes place in Dessen’s beach town or Dessen’s town town; quirks of the cast of characters who will become the protagonist’s friends; exactly how boring the love interest is (it’s always somewhat boring); whether the main character is kind, brave, or smart (those are the only options).

This one comes down pretty well. McLean’s dad is a restaurant consultant, which is SO FUN. The family drama is that McLean’s mom cheated on her dad with his hero, which is a tad too messy but still comes out all right in the end. The book is set in the non-beach town, which I usually like less but it works this time. The characters aren’t overly quirky, but they banter well, which is better. The love interest is pretty unboring, by Dessen standards. McLean is kind, which is good, because she’s sweet to characters that are sometimes laughed off by other Dessen teen girls.

Bottom line: Sarah Dessen always writes by a formula. This time, the formula works! Hurray!
