This book was very different from what I thought it would be about based on the title and I went in blind after only picking this up because it is narrated by the amazing Jesse Vilinsky. I expected a dark thriller, but in truth, this was a thoughtful coming-of-age story exploring grief, depression, and relationships in the wake of the loss of a loved one. While it doesn't have a riveting plot, it was an emotional look at how one event can affect the trajectories of so many lives. I found the main character's voice to be very compelling, even if I don't agree with some of the choices she made.

OK, I actually won a giveaway for this which never happens. But I'm so glad I did, because otherwise it might be sitting in my TBR pile for months before I got to it and I would have been missing out. I try to go into books knowing little about this and this book wasn't what I expected, but I say that in the best way. It's not dark in the way that keeps you up at night out of fear, but it's dark in the very real way it addresses how the death of a loved one can change our whole lives and the way we think.
I absolutely loved the author's writing style and will absolutely be reading more of her work. The story was told through stream-of-consciousness from the character Sally and follows a years long narrative. There is a bit of a romantic plot line, but I liked how it was more of a side plot while the book as a whole focused more on grief. Overall 5/5 mostly because I loved the writing style. Very quick read.

Inappropriate romance trope. But I didn’t hate it. In fact, I shamelessly rooted for it. Tragic, but narrated with a sardonic wit. It will depress you, but you’ll occasionally laugh about it. Grim, but refreshingly humorous. Most of all, touching.
