Sadly the copy I had was a mis-print and three chapters near the climax were replaced by previous chapters. However, This was a wonderfully engaging leisure read. The transition of chapters from past to present was well done and the attention to detail beautiful.

I would have rated it higher till the end. It just wasn't believable. I mean, come on... No way does that happen. And I say that about two of the last developments!

Kada pomislim na Lusindu Rajli prvi roman koji mi padne na pamet je, zapravo, U senci masline. To je prvi roman koji sam kupio od nje, ali kao poklon na osnovu sinopsisa. Kako je Lusinda godinama popularna zbog serijala romana Sedam sestara, moram da priznam da su mi ti romani budili znatiželju da ih pročitam, ali sam ipak želeo da Lusindu upoznam kroz neki drugi roman. I tako sam kupio roman Kuća orhideja. Zašto nisam kupio U senci masline, koji mi je i dalje prva pomisao na Lusindu, ostaje mi je nepoznanica. Valjda važi i ono da knjiga nađe put do čitaoca.

Ako se ne varam, kao i ostali romani Rajlijeve, Kuća orhideja je obimniji roman. A kad god imam u planu da čitam obimnije romane, nekako moram da se pripremim psihički da urinom u taj svet, jer znam da ću bar čitavu sedmicu provesti sa njim. Sa druge strane, čitala mi se neka priča o ljudima i njihovim sudbinama, nešto životno i lagano. Moram da priznam da sam to od ovog romana dobio.

Ovaj roman je meni bar zanimljiv. Treba vremena dok se malo naviknemo na opis radnje i upoznamo likove. Čak sam u dva momenta pomislio da ostavim roman, ali znatiželja je bila jača. Problem je bio što mi je i bio zanimljiv i nije. Nije imao neki šokantan momenat koji hvata na prvu, već je više poput tihe vode koja roni breg.

Sam roman je podeljen u dva dela – Zima i Leto. Takođe, roman priča dve priče – jedna je u sadašnjosti, a druga sedamdeset godina pre sadašnjeg momenta. I kroz roman je to podeljeno u pet celina – počinje sadašnjošću pa se smenjuje sa prošlošću. Taj početak iz prošlosti je meni u prvom trenutku bio onako, pitao sam se šta će mi, kad će opet sadašnjost. A opet, kad smo se vratili u sadašnjost shvatio sam da mi je taj deo iz prošlosti mnogo drag i da jedva čekam da mu se vratim. Zaista, prošlost nas na toliko načina obeležava da nismo ni svesni. O tome govori ovaj roman, između ostalog.

Kuća orhideja je roman pun nekih detalja, možda se čini čak i malo preopširan i da bi mogao da bude nešto kraći. Ipak, i ovakav je zanimljiv i drži pažnju – nudi nam ljubavnu priču, odnosno dve ljubavne priče. Jedna je iz sadašnjosti, druga iz prošlosti. Osim ljubavi, u ovom romanu ćemu čitati i o velikoj duševnoj boli i gubitku, kao i kako se osoba sa njima nosi. Takođe, tu su i oni likovi za koje mislite da u svom životu ivek drže sve pod konac i da su veoma organizovani i da ih ništa ne može poljuljati. Ovaj roman će pokazati da itekako može.

Ovaj roman jeste jedna životna priča, odnosno odlomak nečijih života koje je sudbina povezala na sebi svojstvene načine. I zato volim ovakve romane – oni nam pokazuju da u ovom svetu ima raznih priča, ljudi, doživljaja nekih događaja i emocija. Svi ljudi imaju neke svoje teškoće i borbe, to što nama neko izgleda stameno i kao da zna šta radi i da mu je lako u životu to ne znači ništa.

Sa druge strane, ovaj roman mi je u tom prelomnom trenutku nekih osamdesetak stranica pred kraj pao u očima, kada se dešava jedan veliki preokret. Prosto mi je bio šok otkud sad to i nije mi prijalo. Narednih dvadesetak stranica su mi bile teške i čudne. Imao sam problem da razumem Džesiku zašto je izabrala taj neki put koji je izabrala. Na kraju sam uspeo da je razumem i veoma mi je drago što se završio kako se završio. A kad smo kod završetka, on mi se nije dopao. Previše mi je srećan k sve na svome mestu. Sve je to lepo i drago mi je zbog njih, ali ne verujem u toliko srećne krajeve.

Kao što sam već spomenuo, smatram da je Kuća orhideja mogla da bude nešto kraća. Sama priča kao priča je zanimljiva, posebno što se mogu povući paralele između te dve ljubavne priče koje imamo u romanu. Ovaj roman ide na listu onih za koje mi je drago da sam ih pročitao, iako nisam oduševljen previše njim. Dovoljno mi se dopao da ponovo zakoračim u svet Lusindu Rajli, moguće da će to biti U senci masline. Jednostavno volim da čitam priče o ljudima, njihovim čudesnim sudbinama, putevima kojima idu kroz život.

Loved it. Couldn’t put it down. Had to take a star off for the somewhat wacky plot twist at the end but tbf I was not expecting it!

There are few things in this life I feel I have to authority to proclaim more than this: this book was not good. It seems to be a trend lately to write books that have two stories. One that takes place in the present, one that takes place in the past, and haunting secrets that resonate through generations. We can probably call it the Kate Morton Effect, as her historical novels are far more popular than they have any business being (don't get me wrong, I love them). Many of them are good, connect well between storylines, and keep the reader entertained no matter which story is on the page. This was not one of them. Honestly, I've never a read a book that was so full of cliches. There were several moments where I had to pause and wonder if I should just put it down and stop wasting my time, but decided to persevere for the small amount of me that was curious to see if there would be some sort of interesting twist. There wasn't. Every single thing that happened in this book was obviously from the start. It read like the author had glutted herself on Kate Morton, seasons of Downton Abbey, and then threw in some Madame Butterfly for good measure.

Christopher "Kit" Crawford has inherited Wharton Hall, his family's manor house, and is getting ready to sell up when he and Julia, who's grandfather was the gardener at Wharton, meet once again and there are immediate sparks. When a found journal from a Japanese prison camp during World War II is unearthed Julia visits her grandmother for answers and hears the tale of Harry Crawford, Kit's second cousin, his quick marriage to debutante Olivia, and a secret love in the far east. As Kit and Julia fall into a relationship it soon seems as if history may be repeating itself. Spanning from England, to Thailand, and the Côte d'Azur 'The Orchid House' is a sweeping tale of familial secrets, betrayal, and starting anew.

The dialogue was, in a word, horrific. When I first started I had to quickly check the back to see if the author was American or some other nationality because her English phrases were so ridiculously cliche. And that's not even taking the stilted conversation into account. This book was dialogue driven, which can work, if the dialogue is written well. This was not. There were so many strange endearances and immediate declarations that it made me roll my eyes far more than was probably healthy. My eyes could have stuck like that.

To be honest, I wondered if Riley had changed the time period from the time surrounding World War I with the time surrounding World War II. Her descriptions of Olivia's season and the role of Elsie all screamed early twentieth century. By the forties I have never heard of a girl wearing a corset, for example. Elaborate hairdos were not everyday And, most importantly, most manor houses were either divided and sold or given to the National Trust. Now, that's not to say there weren't manor houses in operation in the forties, there certainly were, but they were in their last gasp and it seemed like a striking ommision not to mention this, especially when one of the characters must give up his life for his obligation to the place.

The whole story was over-dramatic, cliched, and lacked any sort of motivation. But that's not to say everything was wrong with this book. It wasn't good, to be sure, but I did find myself wondering about characters and what would happen to them. There was one, albeit groan inducing, twist in the third act which it book could have, and should have, done without. I was curious about Lidia and what had become of her, but her fate could have been explained in a paragraph. Overall, I wouldn't recommend. I've read a lot of books like this one and can honestly say that this one is not up to snuff.
