Loved the author’s first book, The Firekeeper’s Daughter, so I wanted to read this. The author is a beautiful writer, has a strong voice, and I appreciate the way she weaves an authentic and unapologetic Indigenous culture into her work. She speaks Anishnaabemowin throughout, at times without translating, which I appreciate. I learned so much just by absorbing and witnessing the story. That said I enjoyed her first book better. The second half of this book felt rushed and a bit messy to me. But I definitely enjoyed the read.

Very slow book that lacks a real storyline. I always waited for the story to begin, then thought it began only for the resolution to come very quickly and a new storyline springing up. But I appreciated learning so much about the repatriation of indigenous ancestors.
