I cried my way through the last 1/3 of *Godshot.* It's a scenic, irreverent novel about climate change and patriarchy. Bieker weaves the scene of draught and climate change on every page, shaping the narrative and the characters and creating a sense of strange wonder. The power of the novel is in the mother daughter relationship, with lines that broke me open and rang true in ways I hadn't understood before about mothers who try their best and are still so far from being enough.
pg 138: I wondered how my mother was able to breathe at all, without me. But perhaps she wasn't, perhaps she was distraught with longing, and this made me feel even worse. It was easier to imagine her heartless"
pg 207: I had no bruises on my body to show my motherloss, and so it anyone else, did it exist?
311: I knew then immediately in my haze like the surest thing. I wanted unconditional love from my mother, and I was not going to have that. But somehow I held unconditional love for her. Perhaps giving it away could be its own reward.

Godshot took a hold of me and did not let go. It helped me understand my own fears about becoming a mother. It helped me feel seen as a person who has experienced COCSA, religious trauma, and abandonment.
When you experience so many traumatic events its easy to feel like you’re brokenness is innate. This story made me realize how untrue that is.
It’s also a beautiful story about resilience through generational trauma. Who would Lou have become if she didn’t have Cherry as her mother? If her father was alive?
There is a huge theme of hope/abandonment. It reminds me of the phrase “a mother is god in the eyes of a child”.

Well written, disturbing cult story - I’m honestly not sure how I felt about this book but it took me a while to finish so I can say it didn’t quite grasp my attention. By the end as the plot ramped up I did get more into it.
