I loved the narrator, Lacey May, and felt a lot of empathy for her. While the story kept me interested and the conflicts were disturbing and uncomfortable, I did feel like the cult and supporting characters were underdeveloped, and sometimes the language was overwrought.

Godshot by Chelsea Bieker is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late February.

Turning to evangelism to reverse the effects of a severe drought, Lacey May feels the pressure to mature and grow up to prove herself useful, but stows away every weak, emotive feeling she has from everyone else. Their town is a dry, sunscorched, barren paradise riddled with the weeds of misdeeds and a temptation of either working as a phone sex operator or being a source of salvation. There's also a frequency in Southern turns of phrase, as though it's the 1980s lit with a frosted overburnt lightbulb.
