This book started off slow, and I initially put it off for a few weeks, but somehow I got really hooked when I picked it up again yesterday. It’s an overall slow-paced book, but it’s super well-written and the atmosphere is captivating.
Oh, how I loved this book. I love a good story about a cult and this one delivered. Also, very impressive that this was a debut because the writing in this one was so good!
You should definitely check this one out if:
-you love books about cults
-you love California desert settings
-you enjoyed The Girls and/or The Water Cure
-you enjoy excellent writing
-you like stories with strong feminist themes
Both THE GIRLS and THE WATER CURE were books that I absolutely loved and this one combined elements of both of them in the best way.

I don’t know how to feel about this book. But literally the last three sentences had my heart in its grip.
Oh my god? This book just simultaneously saved me and ruined my life.
If you read my reviews, you know by now that I love (and prefer) a messy, broken main character- this book delivers. Lacey May is 14 and lives with her alcoholic mom in a town called Peaches that was hit hard by drought and whose only remaining citizens are members of a church (some say cult). The synopsis actually doesn't even begin to capture the raw, difficult, interesting pieces of this book. While it's fiction, the hardships Lacey May faces are tough to read at spots, so while I'm giving this a 5☆ review, I'll recommend it to select folks that I won't think will judge me for LOVING this book. (I feel the same way about 'All the Ugly and Wonderful Things' by Bryn Greenwood, so if you've read that and loved it, this is similarly beautiful and f*cked up.)
This book took me two tries to get through. I can't really put my finger on why - but I didn't sink in the first time. I picked it up again a few months later and devoured the second half in a day. A cross between Educated and White Oleander with some NXIVM thrown in for good measure. A religious sex cult, mother daughter relationships and phone sex workers. Loved it.
