Bring Me Back

B.A. Paris

3.27 AVERAGE

dark mysterious slow-paced

Build up was good, points deducted because I didn’t like the ending /:

I really tried to like this book. It kept me entertained, but I found the characters unlikeable, and the twists just too cheesy for my taste. Every chapter sort of felt the same: Finn gets information, tries to make sense of it, then suddenly in the last paragraph, it clicks. But what exactly clicks? We have to read the next chapter to find out. The constant cliffhangers weren’t fun in that way, and I wish the author gave you the answer with no context, then built the context in the next chapter.

Much of the plot was also creepy and irrational. Not my vibe.

Umm, no.

Screwy psychological thrillers are my favorites! Although I did eventually guess where this book was going, it was so far into it that it still felt like it was a shock! Layla goes missing from a car in Paris and all we really know is that her boyfriend wasn't entirely truthful about the moments leading up to her disappearance. Now, 12 years later, he is set to remarry and has moved on with his life, when it seems as though someone wants him to believe that Layla is back. I tore through this novel in less than 24 hours, including some unwise car reading time. Can't wait to pass it along and see what others think!

I mean, this was just the most ridiculous ending and one of the more boring stories I've read in awhile. TW: explicit descriptions of domestic violence.

B.A. Paris has yet to let me down. I had trouble getting into it at first but once I did, the pages just kept turning. It wasn't predictable and honestly it had me a bit unnerved reading it at night!

Ahhhhhh... I have such mixed feelings about this book. I don't know where to start or how to properly review without giving away spoilers, but I just had such high hopes throughout the first half of this story and then... meh.

This was my first B.A. Paris book. I've heard great things about the author and this book in particular, the buzz was deafening, but for me it just fell flat.

Don't get me wrong, the premise was so intriguing and I jumped right in with all the whodunit questions. I jumped from character to character with the turn of every page, not knowing who knew what, who did what, and these are EXACTLY the style of books I love. Unfortunately, I had major suspicions about 50% through, and I was pretty much correct - but the execution just made me more or less angry. It's like those books where you're so dumbfounded, you have no idea whats going to happen, you're so excited for those super fun twisty turny clues and then everything starts falling into place. But this was not the case with Bring Me Back. It felt like a cop-out at the end. It was like - the whole story was questions, and then you get all the answers in one final chapter and you're like... ummm what? I dunno - it felt lazy at the end, unconnected a bit, and pretty unbelievable.

The basic story is that Finn meets Layla, they fall in love and then one night, as they're stopped at a gas station rest stop, Finn returns from the restroom and Layla is gone. Did she leave, was she forced or kidnapped? Ten years later, Finn is about to marry someone else, and clues begin to appear raising questions as to if Layla is alive, and if so, where is she?

Without spoiling anything, I WILL say It was a fun idea, and the writing is top notch. I loved how stories were interwoven and little clues popping up everywhere. But again, the end just fell flat for me. I'll definitely be checking out some of B.A. Paris's other books for sure though after reading this. I really enjoyed the writing style and MOST of the book!
medium-paced

The books goes on a steady pace, and then the ending throws a curve ball.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review. I have to leave a middle of the charts rating for this book because it was intriguing and boring at the same time. Layla goes missing 12 years ago and Finn has moved on with Ellen (her sister). Finn has never found closure from Layla's disappearance and wonders if she may still be alive. When Finn gets engaged to Ellen mysterious dolls start to show up and he questions if Layla is alive and what he would do if she comes back. Would he choose Layla or Ellen? At one point in time I had the ending right but I thought it was so far fetched that it wasn't actually the truth. This book will definitely keep you guessing and the ending will probably surprise you. I found the middle parts of the book to be a little bit boring and wanted more to happen. There was a lot of what should I tell Ellen and secret keeping that went on throughout what seemed like 20 chapters. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely read more. Give this one a chance and it could surprise you!
