This book made me think about storygraph’s “are the flaws of the main character a main focus of the book?” question because yes, absolutely. from the beginning, Sally cannot imagine anyone finding her lovable. it was sort of annoying but the plot and lightheartedness saved it! I liked the writing style. it was a cute and fun read

Overall I’d classify it as fine. The premise and storyline concept were enjoyable. However, it was chunky in many parts when it  attempted to be hyper-aware/modern in a way that felt forced and a bit too blunt for the reader. In those parts it kind of felt like the narrator assumed the reader didn’t have any media literacy (more telling instead of showing).

Honestly this book was so cute. The only downside was the realness of covid seeping in but I thought overall it was still so adorable!

I really wanted to like this book, the synopsis was enticing. But the first third of the book was basically just explaining how SNL works, which I feel like most people are aware of so the explanation felt unnecessary and long. The other two thirds of the book were set in the summer of 2020.

I didn’t mind that they reconnected via email during the pandemic. I thought it was weird that two almost 40 year olds were caught up with some person they knew for a week years prior. Where the book really lost me was when she decided to drive cross country, during the pandemic, just to hang out with the guy she’d been emailing for a week. I also didn’t love how insecure the protagonist was about her looks and how caught up she was in everyone’s appearances. I didn’t mind it at first, but it didn’t feel like she had any growth in that area.

This book heavily deals with COVID in the immediate summer of 2020 with uncertainty, anxieties, and all other political events that happened in the US during that time.

This was such a fun read! As someone who has never sat and watched a full episode of SNL, weirdly enough, this has made me want to. The way the author portrays working there has given me a whole new appreciation for the crazy work that they do at that show. Not only that, but the entire portrayal of life in and on the fringes of fame is insightful, realistic, and impeccably charming. I especially adored the way the natural insecurities, anxieties, and neurosis Sally has are written (partially because I feel SEEN and partially because they were done with such an exacting attention to detail).

The love story here was beautiful in all its messiness and flaws. I can’t help but applaud the balance Sittenfeld was able to strike between the MCs communicating like adults and miscommunicating like humans. Truly just delightful from beginning to end!
