The first half of the book I found a bit too slow to my liking, although I did enjoy the contrast of the two families, the Richardson’s and Mia and Pearl Warren.

The main conflict; the case of Mirabelle/ May-Ling appeared close to the halfway point of the story. It introduced one of the main themes of the story: motherhood.

The theme was very well written and thorough. Nothing about it felt black and white.  Admittedly, I didn’t care for a lot of the characters views on things,(the adoption, the surrogacy)but I understood them.

Decided to read this after loving the show and really enjoyed it. I’d be interested to see what my feelings would’ve been reading this without watching the show first as I constantly contrasted the differences between the two and I THINK the show was a BIT better and gave the characters more dimension.

Narrator of the audio book was great! This is a story of 2 families. Single mom/eccentric artist Mia who tends to live a nomadic life with her daughter Pearl, and the Richardsons, who appear to live a life in ease in their perfect little home in a perfectly planned community. It reminds me of a Stepford community but only in the sense that the community was planned precisely down to the roads, the houses etc. AND everyone follows all the rules. That is until Mia and Pearl enter the scene.

Well written novel that explores the family dynamic and tension among everyone when a court case threatens to upend this safe little community. What I really liked about this book was there were no concrete answers to the issues posed. It really got me thinking about what I would do if I was a certain character at the time. We are reading it for book club and I have no doubt, we are going to have some lively discussion around it.

I was super excited to read this book with my bookclub because it had been so widely read and recommended both in print and through the TV show. However, I was surprised when I almost gave up on it entirely; glad I pushed through. The beginning is tough and I had a hard time not only figuring out who everyone was, but honestly even caring. It doesn't grab you immediately; the writing lulls you in and holds you there until you are thrust forward at the right time. Once the first little push happens, the story, characters, plot, all of it convenes down a Rollercoaster style path until you're literally breathless, finding ways to flip the pages, to read faster, to know more.
