Good fucking god this book
I mainly picked it up because it was about stand up comedy, and the joke on the back cover made me laugh, and now i feel like i need to sit in this spot and feel my feelings and think my thoughts for an hour. Oh, also, it’s 1 am, i have yoga at 9:30 tomorrow, and i was supposed to go to bed two hours ago, but every time i made it to a “stopping point” i said five more minutes and turned the page.
Okay, feelings sufficiently communicated, here’s some actual information about the book:
This Will Be Funny Someday is about a sixteen year old girl who feels like she doesnt have a voice discovering stand up comedy. It’s also a deeply moving story about an abusive relationship, and what it takes to get out of that. And those two halves of the story fit so perfectly with each other, work so well with & against each other, that i had several moments of intense professional jealousy as a writer. And the jokes are funny! (The ones that are supposed to be, anyway, any sixteen year old who stumbles into stand up comedy is set to bomb, and this book is realistic about that. which i appreciated—the main character doesnt have a magic talent for stand up comedy, but she works at it, and she has friends who help her, and she gets better)
anyway, i have to feel my feelings & then go to bed, and then probably check out everything katie henry’s ever written

Not so much a coming-of-age as a coming-of-self. I loved the humour and pain and catharsis of watching this character figure out who she is (albeit in the worst ways).

Listen, I'm a sucker for a girl finding her voice.
