If I could, I would give chapter 19 five stars. The rest of it is a mess.
I read this because of the film and have never read any hemingway before and am doubtful that I will read anymore after this.
Not really my sort of thing.

Putosin jossain vaiheessa kärryiltä kun luin väsyneenä mutta loppu oli niin hyvä että se pelasti sit sen mun oman mokan ihan täysin
Not my favorite Hemingway, but still a compelling and beautifully written book. I loved Harry Morgan's character, and only started to dislike the book a little when we began to veer away from him. Richard Gordon? Who cares? I want action and dialogue, not the inner monologue of the rich and dull. I understood the need for including these characters, as hollow as they and their stories are, (it's called To Have and To Have Not, after all), but I felt that Hemingway could have integrated those two worlds more successfully to create a more cohesive work.
So, it was $0.99 and I thought, "OK, I'll give Hemingway one last shot". We'll this one was actually not bad. It had a plot (well for most of the book) and everything. I think I'm starting to figure out his style, but I still don't always get it. Like why would you introduce a whole bunch of new characters whose role is basically to fill time? What's with the affair and the fights between soldiers? It seems like he put it in there as a bridge between scenes when he could have just skipped to the next scene that's actually part of the story.
I haven't completely given up, but we'll see.
