Fantastic book! I feel some areas need something but the insight on hormones was very interesting and enlightening. I’ll have to reread.

This book helped me connect so many pieces of information I’ve gained over my years as an educator and parent. I so appreciate the recognition that we are too often stuck in the mindset of expecting our children to simply HAVE self-control, while we should instead focus on helping them LEARN self-regulation. In addition, I am thankful that the author points of various pieces of advice often found in popular parenting books and recognizes how they negatively affect us. I’m sure I will be remembering “don’t focus on parenting styles - instead focus on a calm and consistent response style”. Such a simple piece of advice, but potentially life-changing! I look forward to letting this book stew in my brain in the months to come - and even more so see how it changes the way I walk alongside my kids in our shared quest for self-regulation!

It has a lot of basic information. So if you don’t know much about regulation with your child it’s a great introduction book… but as for practical to this day try this activies it doesn’t have much. It’s more a lot of examples of why you need to regulate.

Loved the concept, but didn't find the examples to be especially illuminating.

This turned into a skim for me. I wanted the book for very practical reasons, to help me with my son. Instead, much of the book seemed to be about the science of the brain and identifying if your child needed self-regulation. While I'm sure that is interesting, it held very little insight into what I can do with my child.

I assumed this would be like most parenting books: a few gems but mostly hopeful thinking in terms of strategies. It’s far more realistic, helpful, and researched than that. It blows self-control rules and disciplining out of the water. (It also does a wonderful job showing how inaccurate the marshmallows test was, as a side note.) It talks about balancing stress and energy, as well as recognizing the impact and results of both hyperarousal and hypoarousal (being over or under reactive). And the reminders that it’s ok to try things and see if they work (and they might not — or work for one person but not another), is so refreshing and realistic. Best of all, it supports the notion that everyone is doing their best. And even bullies can get help (and that would truly stop the bullying rather than zero-tolerance which doesn’t do anything long term). Self-regulation is like self-control’s older, wiser sibling.

This would have been really helpful a dozen years ago for us. Thankfully, we've been able to learn from great people. I'd recommend this book to people so they can learn more efficiently than we did.

Self-Reg is a useful way to look at behaviour, both of children and adults. I think I expected more tangible takeaways.
