I love this author and her writing. This story just wasn’t for me.

This book and its characters feel like they could be real. From heart-rending moments to joyful experiences, the emotions of the characters feel so natural and authentic. I appreciated how the author was true to her characters' personalities and how she slowly had them work through their issues to learn more about themselves and how to love each other. Plus, the message of love and forgiveness in this story was beautiful.

This book has a more serious tone overall as compared to similar novels because it deals with grief and abandonment. Due to that, it was a slower plot, but by no means does that mean it's less of a story. There's a depth to it that just makes it lovely to read (or in my case, listen to).

I haven't been a fan of second chance romance in the past (mostly because I feel like I get airdropped into a couple's story and don't get to see them from start to finish), but the author got it right in this story. We see Kate and Callum as they first get to know one another, and then we're there along through their journey of learning to truly love each other despite major roadblocks.

In the end, this is a lovely tale of forgiving and loving others despite their imperfections. Content is very clean with a few kisses and implied marital intimacy. No swearing and no violence.

Orphaned as a young girl, Lady Katherine has been raised by her doting grandfather. Nearing his deathbed, he arranges her marriage to his old school friend’s son, Lord Rowand, a future Duke.

Son of an Englishman and lowly Scottish woman, Lord Callum Rowand can never please his father, no matter how much he tries. Preferring to spend time with his Scottish uncle, using his hands and working the land, Callum dreams of a marriage opposite his parents. One of love and happiness. Now, without choice yet again, he is being forced to marry an English woman of his father’s choosing.

After an unexpectedly wonderful wedding night, Callum discovers his father’s treachery and leaves everything (including his new wife behind). Little did he know the damage that one choice would cause.

Now 4 years later he comes home to repair what has been lost only to find he left more behind than he could have dreamed.

Can Kate ever open her heart again? Can Callum ever be forgiven? Can he ever forgive his father? Only time will tell.

Read for:

•Second Chance Romance
•Grief/Loss
•Arranged Marriage
•Loyalty
•Family Ties
•Beautiful Scotland

I really love this story of grief, loss, forgiveness, and finding hope, love, and ultimately joy. As the story unfolds the depth of grief and strength in “Katie” are beautifully exposed and my heart ached so much for her. I also loved the perspective of Callum yearning for family. We often read about women wanting to be married and having children, so it was refreshing to feel that from him.

I would have loved to see more interactions with (and between) Callum’s parents, but we do see enough to understand his perspective and what his childhood was like.

i always love a good redemption and second chance story but i don't think the hero really ever understood the trauma he put the heroine through even though he did claim so. gave me strong feminist leftist men vibes which i hate.
