Easily one of my favorite reads this year. I love the tone and found all of the twists to be fair and enjoyable.
It scratches a very petty, not-super-christian itch in my brain.

It was a slow start, but it did get better as it went along. Interesting premise, and I like the alternating focuses of the chapters. I was not much of a fan of the way that the emphasized words were underlined in the narrative instead of being italicized, but I got used to it.

Overall enjoyable! Definitely requires some suspension of reality, but does a good job justifying the excuse of an Ivy-esq school that teaches murder. I do think the pacing was a little uneven (the first half dragged a little, while the second half flew by). Really witty and each of the man three students had very distinctive voices and POVS. I found essentially of the journal entries in Cliff’s first journal to be a slog, and wish we had seen more of Gemma and Dulcie while at McMasters.

I loved every second of it. Couldn’t put it down and that’s not just bc I hate my job. It’s humorous homicide. The whole book should really have felt dark and depressing, but it was so captivating and funny it came off lighthearted. The narrative + journal entry format worked perfectly, allowing the air of mystery to stay throughout, even the sign off was 🤌 My only negative is that it wasn’t longer. I felt we didn’t spend enough time at McMaster. I would have loved to experience more classes and lessons before they completed their thesis. Totally worth the read. I will recommend this book to people 💯

Glad I stuck with this! The overall structure and writing style are a little too weird. The language is tryingly superfluous. So, it drags, even though it also tries much too hard to be funny. Still, I grew to love the characters. The ending is highly satisfying. Gorgeous map. Generally I would not recommend this book, but it was a great gift. 🌹

It took a bit to get into this book. The premise is neat and the language use is fun and intentional. The setting of the book diverges at one point and I wish it had developed a little more before the change
I would have enjoyed more world building on the campus before the “students” left to complete their “theses”
. I was very disappointed by the presence of transphobia/homophobia/racist micro-aggressions towards the end of the text. It is set in the 1950s & I’ve seen some comments arguing that the author was trying to replicate realities of the time… but I disagree. These descriptions seemed unnecessary and harmful.  one plot point hinged on transphobia in a very weird way.
One of the female “deletists” (murderers) cross-dressed and also deposited evidence that was used to conceal her identify and “embarrass” the victim posthumously (simultaneously implying that sex between 2 men would be such a scandal & reiterating harmful and dangerous stereotypes about trans people).
The female characters also experienced sexual violence &/or harassment and lacked much character development. There was also a strange pro-life argument squeezed into some of the final pages. I had higher hopes for this book but the content warnings mentioned above left a very bad taste.
