Horrifying, interesting, and hilarious at the same time. A great book to read if you have ever wondered what it was like to live in Ancient Rome.

A phenomenal book about all forms of murder in the late Republic and early Empire of Rome. Emma Southon covers a vast range of cases by looking at material and written sources with a critical eye, while maintaining empathy for innocent victims of murder (treating them as real people who lived and then died, something that doesn’t often happen when we are taught about ancient history), all while cracking jokes to keep it entertaining. This is a great history book for beginners and scholars alike because the text is accessible but also incredibly scholarly and detailed, and it’s not very often that I have a chuckle while reading a non-fiction book. A must-read!
