The topic was very interesting, but the writing style got a little tedious.

This is a really solid book on Roman Social History IF you have limited prior experience in Roman Social History. The "Modern Day bias" is striking and occasionally gets very distracting. Looking at Emma's academic background it's obvious to see why, and maybe I'm just not the target market?
There are some historical inaccuracies or things that could be disproved (the Nero bit stuck in my head), however again- maybe these things were not in Emma's wheelhouse and that is how her peripheral research came up.
It's occasionally funny. You don't see a lot of this in the normally bone dry desert that is Roman history. Some of her humour just didn't match mine and made me cringe a lot (there are parts of this book that sound like messages I sent to my friends during my dissertation.)
Idk, something about this book just didn't jive with me. From her Twitter Emma is a very cool person who I would love to have a beer with and explain why I massively fancy Marcus Agrippa. But I just didn't like this one.
