With all eyes on Russia today, this was an interesting read to unpack the origins of oligarchs and how the economy works (or doesn't). I frankly wasn't too interested in Browder's "brilliant" investments, but moreso in the societal commentary they touched on. I had heard about Russia's notoriously mafia style business environment, which this book clarified in detail for me – between Browder's and other experiences.
One uncomfortable quirk about Browder's writing that I didn't like was his consistent commentary on characters as they're introduced, especially for women. Everyone seemed to be described as a "short/tall, attractive/unattractive, blonde/brunette" person, which makes Browder come of quite shallow.

Amazing tale. He is not the best writer however. The dialogue mostly seemed silly and not authentic.
Personally, I was bogged by by all the high finance information. But I don't understand that world of buying and trading.
Incredible story.

Looks like a Dad Book, talks like a Dad Book, but is still an excellent primer on Russian oligarchs.
took me almost 6 months but I finally finished this installment in eamon & I’s boon swap!!!!
let me start by saying this is a very compelling and interesting story, and is also written very well. I just personally struggle with reading non-fiction stories told in a fictional manner. however I think if this has been a podcast series with clips of phone calls and interviews…. yeah i would have ate that shit UP!
basically, this is about a guy who’s the grandson of one of the most prolific leaders of the American communist party. In an act of rebellion he decides to go to college, go into finance, and work in Russia. His words were something along the lines of because his grandfather was the biggest communist in a capitalist country, he would be the biggest capitalist in a communist country which is just so petty so that made my giggle. Anyway he’s in Russia and basically realizes, through many many messed up events, how screwed up it is, and is now a human rights activist. So, overall a very cool story!!
