"Family was duty. Blood was destiny. And jade was the key to it all."

The world building in this was fun, I felt like I could really imagine the world that's so dedicated to jade! It does feel a little slow to start with but it transitions to action very nicely.

The range of characters is nice, they all felt different and you can understand why each character thinks the way they do. It can be hard to track all the characters so having a list in front of you is a good idea lmao. I like there was a lean into the emotions of war but I wish I felt more connected/emotional. I did like it though, it was a nice start.
I particularly like Bero's thought process
when he "killed" Lan and received no recognition for it.

I've heard it just gets better in the next few books so I'm excited to contnue!

While not a book that fits my tastes (family saga stuff isn't my bag) this was really well written and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who does like family saga stories.

I wasn't very attached to many of the characters, but maybe that would change as I continued the series

It felt wildly predictable and the people one dimensional

3.5 stars. This book had a great premise, I think I just got read it at the wrong time (after the red rising series).

Also I didn’t like the audiobook narrator which is of no fault to the author or story at all.

Thoroughly enjoyed the way this book captivated my attention from jump. The characters kept me engaged, the plot was enticing, the conflict was tough. Hilo…. ugh sir you make it hard to like you. Anden, take your time baby. You’ll be alright. The way the powers exist in this book are also so fascinating

5/5 Jade City is one of very few books that have gripped me in a way that I can’t stop thinking about them even when I’m not busy reading them. I stayed up until 03:00 to finish a book, and I don’t regret a second of it.

While I enjoy a good fantasy book as much as the next guy, I’m not particularly fond of fantasy books where the magic system is overdone or too magicky, if that makes sense. I was delighted to find that in this book the magic system is realistic and simple, which allows it to play a significant role in book

I don’t know what it was about the writing of this book’s characters, but I felt like I was part of the clan, experiencing every moment, every blow from a rival Green Bone, every victory, and sadly, every death (especially Lan’s).

I’ve always liked political and militaristic themes in books, and this books feels like the perfect example of that.

Overall, I loved the book and could find no fault in it.
