I was absolutely hooked from the beginning to the end. The characters were enjoyable and easy to root for despite me not liking some of the stuff they did or said  because while I thought one way, I could see and understand their viewpoint as well. The plot was very interesting and the world building was very unique from what I’ve usually read. I am excited to see where this trilogy will go, and I will be picking up the rest of the series.

Quick spoiler note:

It is rare that a book can bring me to tears like this one did when Kaul Lan died. Never realized how much I enjoyed having his character until he was gone. The entire death section, funeral procession, charger reactions, etc had me in tears the entire time.

my god this was good. it's literally kung fu mafia. what's not to love?

this was such a gripping, electric read about the meaning of family and the consequences of power. i especially appreciated the exploration of the sibling dynamics since you don't see that a lot in fiction! everything about the politics and world building was so intriguing. i can't wait to continue on.

Boringggggggggg. Almost 200 pages in and nothing has happened. I don’t care about most of these characters (except you Lan, you are loved, but not enough for me to continue) and I don’t care where the story is going.
