This book is full of short stories -- so it is hit or miss. Some were wonderful, but many were not that great. There is little in the way of gripping plot, and tend to be more character focused. However, many stories are filled with the evocative, clever Dave Eggers language that made me love "Heartbreaking Work"

I thought I wasn't a big fan of short stories collection but this book has convinced me a little. The stories in this book seemed simple at first but whenever I reach the end, I helplessly explore my thoughts, finding out why that story feels familiar on a personal level. It has also totally taught me to be informed first before going for my own sense of achievement, what's really worth a life. I'll probably go back to this book someday.

Eggers is 50% brilliant and 50% trash, often times in the same story. His writing style started to really annoy me even when it was good near the tail end of this collection.

All of the pomp, but none of the substance.

The deal: Dave Eggers writes great novels. This isn't one of them - it's all short stories, all the time.

Is it worth it?: These babies are super affecting in the best way. Strongly endorse.

Pairs well with: a small attention span, crying on the beach
