This book intrigued me as soon as I saw the special edition (great colours, great art, and a neat blurb). I read the book shortly after receiving the special edition. I love a good sci-fi so the idea of a YA time-loop story definitely caught my attention. The story had a fantastic premise, however I would don’t think it reached its potential.

First of all, this book reads like a YA in the sense that there’s simple language, written from a teen-like perspective, and a quick read, so I can see why it’s categorized as such. However, there is a lot of non-youth content.
The whole premise is one of the main protagonist wanting to, and obsessing about, losing her virginity. This in and of itself is not a big deal given their age, but there is a lot of talk around 🍆s, sex of all varieties, and bodily fluids, if you pick up what I’m putting down.

I feel that this book falls more into new adult. The inconsistency between adult content and young adult writing style kind of detracted from it all for me.

As for the story, I think the immortal octopus premise was really cool and I wish it had been delivered differently. I loved the FMC discovering the best ways to talk to her best friend about the time loop and how she works through it. I think the story had a ton of potential, but it just didn’t quite get there.

I struggled with the lack of closure around a few things.
For one, no explanation of what the “white lobster” was actually for. It was mentioned many times (when you find out what it “is”, but no explanation of why it was important). There was no closure about what happened at the end, did she find her way out or drag someone else in? I don’t know, but I wish I did. What happened to Sibyl? Why did she mangle Bradd? What is the importance of the kittens (their importance is eluded to, but never  explained or shown in any way)?
There is just so much information that you never truly find out the relevance of. Overall, I didn’t hate the book but it didn’t wow me.

This is a wild ride for those of us who have a childish humor about sex.

While there are no explicit scenes per se, a lot of this book is just pure teenage horniness and drugs. The characters are a diverse cast of seriously flawed people, mostly teens.

Some of the characters are a bit unbelievable like John and Mia Luca.

Overall a unique fever dream of a timeloop.

I listened to the audiobook and aside from fat shaming commentary from the FMCs mom the MMC’s voice acting was horrendous and there’s were weird jokes about aborting babies that fell flat for me.
