I would like to firstly point out that this book completely ignored the existence of non-cis people and I could not find much solid evidence on whether the author is a TERF. Hopefully she isn’t because that would be a very sad footnote on how much I enjoyed what I learned from this. I can appreciate it as a look at exclusively biological differences between male and female, because there is only so much one book can offer, but I do think it needed a few disclaimers. The exclusion of trans and nonbinary people should have been mentioned, at the very least to say it wouldn’t be; and acknowledgement of the existence of intersex people also would have added an important layer to the information presented within.
In any case, this was an informative read. I particularly enjoyed the sections on medical and pharmaceutical research. Some of the more social aspects really highlighted the exclusionary problems I mentioned before. I saw a few reviews mention that the book is very data and statistic-heavy, but I find that to be a weird complaint of a book specifically about data. Personally I enjoyed hearing the statistics. I also found the sections focusing on pandemics fascinating in the wake of Covid, and I would love a look at that pandemic from the perspective of the gender data gap.
All in all, it could have done more, and should have at least acknowledged where it fell short. But for what it was, it was a good introduction into this topic, and I’m now intrigued to learn more.

What a powerful book to help us understand the reality of data within the world.

I found it triggering, but loved reading it and have recommended several times since finishing. It has some great information and a lot of info that you had an idea of, but hearing that actual statistics confirms feelings of inequality that you see everyday.
