I don't say this often, but I honestly would have liked this book way better if there wasn't any romance plot at all. Shea was kickass and had actual skills, not only dumb luck, two things I love in a character. But her motivations when she was a scout and making actual real connections with her team made 100% more sense than her "relationship" with Fallon. I didn't feel any sort of building relationship between the two (which, in my opinion, is the most important part of an enemies to lovers plot), and the absolute 180 Shea took to justify her choices in the latter part of the book didn't feel fully fleshed out and sort of rushed. But I genuinely liked quite a few of the side characters and the story moved pretty well.
Almost 50 pages into the book:
"If the woman, Shea, had wanted to make him lose interest in her, she should have simply surrendered. Now she presented a challenge. Prey to be hunted."
I mentally threw up and put the book down never to pick up again.

This one saddens me. Such a great start, i was H O O K E D. A strong and cunning fmc who is loyal and kind??? Thats all you need to make the perfect book for me. I was in a reading slump so the fact that i finally found a book that I couldn’t put down made me SO EXCITED.
And then.
She folded. Right at the end she folded. The only reason i finished is cuz i was already at 90%.
She became what she swore she never would be. And that made me so mad. Plus i got used to her scout family and loved them, the guards and fallon are so boringgg

Shea could've been a memorable badass fmc if the author hadn't decided to ruin the plot 360° just for the sake of romance and smut.
I ask you my dear reader friends, why are the heroine's personality, ideals, ambitions and such are dissolved in the face of the hero— who does fuck all to fit in the heroine's world?
It pains me immensely when a head strong heroine abandons her ambitions and betrays her people just to tumble in bed with the hero. 😒
I must say this that the hero is a literal tyrant in this and our heroine is a masochist, because why else would she chose a warload who had her whipped, flogged, stabbed and beaten blue and bloody in the name of making her one of his own? 🌚
I honestly liked the heroine for most part of the story until her body betrayal syndrome kicked in.🙄 Oh! How I loathe this with every fiber of my being.
And I HATE the mmc in this. He's a psycho wrapped in a foil of "love interest" and no one can convince me otherwise.
With that said. I've no major complains about this story... Only minor ones.☺️
1. The sudden death of any character's arc. What happen to Dean? Eamon?.. There's this sudden cut off of characters from the storyline as if they never mattered when in fact, they've been there for the most part.
2. Spelling mistakes. There's this one moment in early chapters when Eamon calls Shea by her real name and nothing happens. I was so confused by this I had 10 mins wasted on this.

I was blown away by this book; you get a lot of read for the price. Shea is a scout, or Pathfinder, up in the highlands, and she is almost everything I aspire to in a heroine. Educated more than the typical appalachian backwoods redneck, she guides trade groups to the lowlands but can't relate to them. Early on, Shea saves two of the villagers she has guided, and in the process also saves two strangers who turn out to be Trateri intent on conquering the lowlands. The blurb is accurate, so I won't write further about the plot.
What I loved about this:
--war. A complex plot. It seems like Alexander the Great or the Mongol Horde taking over the continent.
--A strong element of romance (it's the main theme)
--An HEA. The book is a standalone.
Did I care that it is not a true fantasy? No.
Would I recommend it? Heck yes. There are very few books with a strong, educated heroine (who can play cat and mouse with the warlord of a foreign power--woo hoo) who doesn't come off as snarky.

It was so good until it came to the romance, but luckily that wasn’t a huge portion of the book
About the 2nd book: I’ve tried to start the 2nd book but stated getting similar vibes to the end of the 1st - which was my least favorite - and ended up just giving up. May try again but I went through reviews and saw that nothing much happens until 60% through and even then it’s blah.

I stumbled upon this book and did not expect a thing and this turned out amazing! I find the world very intriguing and I hated the villagers with a passion. I agree with Shea, if you're stupid enough not to listen to an expert (partly because she's a woman) then you deserve to get eaten by the beast she tried to warn you about!
I'm not toootally convinced by the romance, especially since it was very abrupt imo. They barely talk to each other, she likes his whiskey coloured eyes, Fallon likes the way she climbs...and somehow that makes them a good match. Okay I guess.
