By far the best book of the series with an appropriate ending for the characters.

3.5 stars - decent end to the quartet, enjoyed the world building more than some of the characters.

I really enjoyed the characters in these books. They are well fleshed out, and you witness their evolution throughout the stories. The world and story arch were very entertaining. If you want an action packed “fluff read”, this is a great one.

So the beginning was pretty good. And the end was what it should have been. But the middle was a bit of a mess. From plot holes and harping on the idea of communication barriers to the point of excess it drove me crazy. The main characters tried to stay true to themselves, but so many of the secondary characters were infuriatingly simple minded.

This series is in many ways the story of Tom and Hester, with all the other preachy bits a far second in importance. But so much is spent on how terrible humans are to the planet that it was really over the top for me. Maybe the kids it was written for need that though? Either way, the book was needlessly complex and preachy. So, 3 stars. Not the worst book in the series but not as good as the first.

You have to take the long view, Tom. It isn't only Traction Cities which poison the air and tear up the earth. All cities do that, static or mobile. It's human beings that are the problem. Everything that they do pollutes and destroys.

Wow! The whole stories in this series begins and ends with London. And anyway, I like that quote very much. Feel like it’s the real core of the stories (Make the world green again, huh?) — and ofc couldn’t agree more with all the human beings do with pollution and destroying.

So first, let’s talk about the character, like always. I still couldn’t get the click with Hester and Tom. Hester left Tom and Wren for her own good, and then years after, she and Tom meets again under unexpected circumstances, then it’s just like nothing happened. They only do some ‘normal’ bickering, and good again. It’s that easy, really? But I’m quite happy with the ending between them.

I’m glad Wren has grown up having a brave heart — but not the stupid bravery like his father did, and have her mom’s stubbornness. She’s still that annoying girl, but I think Theo is such a great pair for her. However, the Wren’s journal is the part I enjoyed the most in this book.

The writing style is consistently ‘not for me’ (like I’ve said from book 1), but the world building system is still that fascinating. This book is the thickest among others, and I think it’s all because too much recalling. I often see myself doing fast-read because of this. Overall, it’s actually an exhausting read for me. I enjoyed some - hating more - feel shocked sometimes - feeling dull most of the time. That kind of complicated feelings.
