Wow, I loved the first book but this one had me in shambles.

First off, Faye is so much more confident than I could ever be. Her mindset about her dancing, and how she holds herself is something I aspire to have. She is such a great person, she loves fiercely, and she constantly puts others before herself. She is the first FMC I have read in a while that I would actually look up to in real life.

Lincoln...what do I even say. The tenderness towards Faye, and the love for his daughters is unmatched. I have read many books with a single dad/father-figure, and Lincoln honestly exceeds all of the others. He is dedicated to his family and his craft. He truly shows up for Faye no questions asked even after a very very rocky start.

I loved this book probably more than I should, it was a perfect blend of romance and suspense. I didn't feel myself wanting more of one or the other. I loved the Kentucky setting, of course, and the fact that it does touch on the intricacies of the bourbon and horse industries here. It talked about the University of Kentucky a few times, but it didnt take me out of the story like some other books might have.

I don't think this book/series is for everyone. But it definitely pulled me out of my reading slup and 5⭐️ drought.

A book published in 2024 having a Harry Potter reference automatically loses at least a star. There was also a Morgan Wallen reference 🥴 Hot covers. Meh books.

holy shit i’m sobbing. this is definitely a book i need to reread in the future because oh my god.

faye and lincoln… literally chef’s kiss. i love the way this author writes. they never use the miscommunication trope in a redundant or unnecessary way and i love how there’s a side plot filled with mystery to keep the readers hooked. it acts as a propelling point of the story, but also leads to insane character development.

faye is such a badass, and she’s so comfortable in herself. same with lincoln. they fit together so well. their compatibility was truly showcased, as well as the way they simply loved each other. i loved watching their love blossom. they had witty banter, emotional bonding, and insane chemistry.

also, the side plot in this story was great and had me genuinely thrilled and filled with suspense.
faye covering for her mother killing her husband, when it was actually her husbands own brother, and then being told to get out of town by lincoln, after blackmailing lincoln. the resentment maggie built up. the guilt faye felt. the reveal to their mother not truly being dead. their familial bond coming though. to finally, the calloway girls getting their justice, with wheeler finch and waz king (WHO BY THE WAY LINCOLN KILLED FOR FAYE IN A MOMENT OF SELF DEFENSE AS HE WAS ATTACKING HER) getting their hand dealt.
i loved watching maggie and faye find each other again, and their sister bond genuinely made me sob (even if maggie annoyed me to no end at the beginning).

watching faye with lincoln’s girls lark and lily was also so precious. the single dad trope was done truly well as they felt like a genuine aspect that mattered. their opinions on the relationship mattered and watching their relationship with faye grow was almost just as heartwarming as their dad’s.

the author has a genuine talent for writing characters that seem to actually care about each other, and for writing insanely emotionally mature people. after the two realized their love for each other, there was never a moment of doubt. they constantly reassured one another and it was amazing. it’s a theme that was in the last book as well, and i absolutely adore it. it leaves no room for petty fights, and i suppose the side plot of mystery helps along with that too. the suspense and conflict being built throughout the story takes over for the “third act break up” and tbh i much prefer it.

being honest, this book wasn’t the one i looked forward to the most. i didn’t necessarily like lincoln because of his manwhorey ways
but after learning about his late wife’s infidelity and how they were broken long before she died, it made everything make much more sense. i also love how lincoln never spoke bad about olivia truly, even if she did cheat. he was mature about it, and often acknowledged how good of a bother she was despite their dying marriage

lincoln was also so swoon worthy
naming his bourbon after her and getting a tattoo for her. never doubting his love or her literally perfection

i truly think lincoln and faye are made for each other, and just like he says, that their love is one of protection and unconditional care: doing anything to protect those you love.

i really want to see how their love is shown in the next book (hadley’s book 😝), and i really hope we get more glimpses of them.

this book genuinely changed my brain chemistry i think. it showed me that love isn’t always firey passion and angst, that instead, it’s contentness and knowing that your loved, and feeling safe and protected and cared for to such a deep level.

i’m so happy to have read this, and now idk if i want to read the next book immediately or wait a bit for this one to digest

Alexa play Weren't For The Wind by Ella Langley

I absolutley LOVE Faye. She's confident, strong, sexy, and badass! Lincoln was a prefect gentleman, a man with slutty little glasses, a delicious little bourbon spit play kink 😏 two lovely kids. They are the total package. I love the suspense and mystery aspect! Who knew all the small town drama could turn into such a big time news! Horse racing IS a pretty big deal. Waz and Wheeler are terrible individuals.. Can't wait to read Ace and Hadley's book. I hope Finch gets whats coming to him!
