Can't say enough about this book except it's everything to me in this moment- this beautiful combination of computers and people and the ocean and islands, things I love and fear, truths about us and myself and you and everybody we care about. Feels like nonfiction in the best way. I can't believe the author lives in the mountains. Hope, despair, the relentless drive of life in the ocean, the past and the future, love for all the sea creatures I will never meet. 💗
It is incredibly dense though and took me a long time to get through- I don't think that's bad, this seems like a story that needs to unfold slowly, but it took a lot of energy to get into, which I appreciate not everyone has. Beautiful book.

Solid, great descriptions of sea animals, and what is happening to our planet and also a look at the way the world it changing so fast with AI and it's seemingly infinite knowledge. But also about how we got here.

Playground centers itself around the dichotomies of poetry vs code, art vs technology, the old ways vs progress, and then again science vs capitalism vs the innate, eternal joy of playing. These are portrayed within in the interconnected lives of four leading characters, who, while not always being completely likeable, are very interesting and written with depth. My favourite was definitely Evelyn's story, which by far had the most touching and emotional parts, and I wish she'd have been more in the spotlight. Powers' description of life underwater were simply magical.
My first impression was that the ending felt rather rushed, but then it lingers, and makes you rethink every word you have read so far and every emotion you felt. And then it slowly dawns... In conclusion, all the money in the world with its newest technology can't buy you the bliss of community and the magic of a mutual understanding of and coexistence with nature.

This book wasn’t for me. It was interesting and well-written, but it just didn’t strike a chord.
