What can I say? I've loved this book since I was 14 or so. And I still love it.
It's not fantastic, per se. But it's a page turner. It keeps me hooked enough. And, the language usage isn't exactly dumbed down. The words and paragraphs flowed smoothly from one to another. I didn't feel any awkwardness reading this book. Which is highly appreciated considering what I've been reading past few months.
A breath of fresh air, I'd say.
Personal feelings aside, I love the description of the clan's ritual and culture, the history of the world this is built upon.
Han Alister had been relying on his wits to survive even without his powers. (which would only surface in the second book.)
And even then, the reason for his "overly powered" self was something that was thought out. It isn't as though he was suddenly some powerful wizard. He still needed to learn to control his powers.
The clan culture is also pretty rich. They have protocols, rules and rituals. Which is amazing to read about. Though I would have hoped they'd be more elaborate on that.

More of a 3.5 really. Look at me just being a complete liar with restarting tons of series I had previously DNFed or said I wasn’t going to read lmao.
This book was SO much setup for the world. I liked the world and lore and mythology behind everything and I’m intrigued enough to continue but tbh I’m only doing it bc I’ve heard book 2 has a school setting and I want that!!
This also reminded me a lot of an ember in the ashes (another series I said I wouldn’t finish but have been reconsidering going back and seeing it all the way through). Mostly because it’s dual POV and both POVs have a lot of love interests at first lol.

DNF @ 45%
I’m sorry I am legit in the middle of TEN books excluding this one and I just have to allow myself to realize that I’m not vibing with some of the things I’m reading and I felt incredibly detached from these characters and story and just…eh. I know everyone loves book 2 for the school setting but this just…doesn’t feel worth it to me. I want to love every book I read and I am here to embrace the DNF.

Rereading this series as an adult when i barely remember what happened has been wonderful i feel like i'm receiving a warm hug from an old friend
The end? The end??? But, but... I want more!
This series is definitely for hardcore epic fantasy fans. The world building is complex. The plot is anything but fast-paced, as it is one of those books that just builds and builds until you get to the awaited climax and realize you still have so far to go.
But I love Han. He is definitely my favorite character. Resa is still growing on me. I love this world and this magic and this folklore. Good stuff.
Now I'm off to read the next one. :)

This book certainly had its flaws, but it was so much fun i can gladly overlook them. This is the kind of classic epic fantasy that is exactly up my alley.

A pretty solid start to a series. Even though there was plenty of action and twists, it’s pretty obvious we’ve barely scratched the surface the surface of what’s going on or how the magic system works. The rift between wizard and green (nature) magic is interesting and almost broke the world before, but the details are kinda scant for now…
But hey it sounds like the next book is heading towards Hogwarts, so it should be interesting.
