Good set-up to what promises to be a great series. The characters are painted well, and are generally multifaceted; Han, Raisa and others are good but with some negative traits, and even cocky Micah has some good in him.
My biggest hang-up with Chima's books unfortunately reappears here - she seems to think that the easiest way to move a story along or get rid of a character you don't want to write a resolution for, is to kill that character off. I wish she would stop using death as a plot mover. Obviously, I don't need books where no one dies and everything is perfect, but it is a common theme in Chima's novels and smells a little bit of taking the easy way out. Otherwise, an excellent read. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

A good start I think. There are some parts that are boring to me, like the spoiled princess who tries to be different and act like she's not spoiled. But I did like the representation of native tribe culture, and how the two cultures interact.

Coming back to this book ten years down the line felt like a real breath of fresh air.
(Although I still don’t understand the need for so many love interests, and I would like to see a strong female friendship. But everything else is top notch.)

- i cliché.

Very slow for the first HALF of the book, it was hard to keep going but because I heard so many good things about it I kept plugging along, it was great! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
I had a really hard time getting through this book. But because it was highly recommended to me from a good friend of mine and I trust her judgement, I kept going. It wasn't until literally HALF way through the book that things good interesting!

Raisa the princess, in my opinion bothered me the most. She was a bit of a lip whore and had "moments" with almost all other male characters! important and not important characters! what the heck?! She was a bit whiny, she is very childish and while I can appreciate some of her sentiments and desires, I just found her not be overly interesting.

Han is the one the kept me going. I wanted to know the mystery behind the cuffs! he was interesting in his life as a streetlord, as an adopted clan-member and an older brother/son.

Things that were interesting were the Princess Raisa, heir to the Gray Wolf Throne, and crossed paths with Han Alister, a former streetlord. The mystery behind the demon king, the cuffs, and all that surround the story and kingdom.

This book/series hold LOTS of promises to be a good series hence why I'm already reading book 2.

Detached prose and flat characters. I couldn’t get into it.
