My first Nicholas Sansbury Smith book and it's a fun one. As a fan of zombie movies and Outbreak style films this book combines some of both. A nice change from the usual YA apocalyptic books I have read.

Very engaging and fun ride. Starts off strong, fast, and doesn't let up. Great characters and action sequences, can't wait to start on the next in the series!

I'm suffering a bit today because I stayed up all night reading this terrific book!
I'm not normally a fan of "zombie" books, but this was a great mix of military action and science fiction.
From page one, this book was a freaking thrill ride! Loved it and just purchased book 2.

A brisk, fast paced military/science fiction thriller with decent characters (compared to how awful most of this genre handles characterization, I’d say good, even) and well written, easy to follow action scenes that don’t go overboard on technical details. Brought down a bit by a few scenarios that stretch the suspension of disbelief but don’t break it entirely. Basically a Resident Evil game in book form.

Extinction Horizon is an intense and exciting story. Nightmare-worthy in the best possible way. Nicholas Sansbury Smith knows how to trigger the fearful unknown and bring it to the surface for us to embark on a journey with the characters to figure out how to stop the sickness threatening civilization. Even more frightening? What comes next...

Nicholas Sansbury Smith takes the readers on an action filled ride as the follow Team Ghost who about to face their most deadly enemy:

Master Sergeant Reed Beckham is the leader of the Delta Team, codename Ghost. He has lead them through every hell hole on this Earht and has never lost a man, but he is about to face the most deadly threat of all, a variant strain of Ebola. This virus has the ability to turn humans in to monsters and it has the ability to spread just as fast as Ebola does. Team Ghost is assigned to extricate and protect the only scientists that could figure out a way to stop the virus and save the human race. As cities fall around the country and world more pressure is put on team Ghost and Dr. Kate Lovato to live long enough to find a cure.

I'm really happy I found Sansbury last year, he has become one of my go too authors when I am wanting sci-fi. I am also happy that he writes series so I can get my fill on many different fronts within this genre. For this book Soldiers vs mutated humans is almost always a good read in my opinion, can gun power really overwhelm numbers is always the question (Ijust think of the Hordes on TWD).

This book does not have a calm second, you just need to hold on for the ride as this book is action packed and goes from one battle to the next, so to say that it is action packed is un understatement. It is also fairly gruesome and gory in the telling of the story, which I think needs to go hand in hand with zombie novels. I have yet to read a book about a nice zombie or where there is not some blood and guts spilling. Sansbury Smith does not hold back but at the same time you are not going to feel the need to lose your lunch. He has found a good balance there.

Beckham is a great main character he is fearless in danger, knows when his back is against the wall and would not put his men through anything that he would not do himself. In other words the type of leader that you would want to follow. I appreciate that none of the members of team Ghost are safe, even Master Sergeant himself. They get hurt and lets just say not all the team members are going to make it back.
I have started three series by Sansbury Smith now and I revel at his ability to have this many series and not have them the same. I am very excited to continue on with this series, as I really enjoyed this book.

Enjoy!!

Although I am listening to the box set 1 - 3 I want to rate them separately. Having had this as an audiobook for a couple of years I am so excited to have finally decided to listen to it.
I actually interrupted listening to "The Heroes" by Joe Abercrombie because I wasn't feeling it at the moment and wanted to try a completely different genre as a palate cleanser.
Is this something mind-boggling new? No! I do enjoy how fluid it is, starting out with a bang it is fast-paced the entire time.
There were a couple of cliches that could have been a bit finer tuned, but all in all, this is a solid read. The only thing is that it truly seems as if the author had a crystal ball and saw into 2020 and wrote this book. Eerily similar to our current situation (minus the zombies).

Onto book two....

I'll edit this again when I'm finished, but man I just have to put into words what I'm feeling right now after this piece of the adventure I just finished!
I've followed Nick on his writing adventures since he put me in a post apocalyptic world created by aliens draining our planets of it's life giving waters. If you haven't read his other books, do yourself a favor and go read them NOW.
I knew I was going to read this book as soon as I'd heard about it, didn't even know what it was about just that Nick wrote it and I was gonna get it. After getting a few chapters into the book I was like, "Ok, good hook, and I'm kind of feeling it, but we'll see where this goes."
Several chapters in I was like, "No, no, please don't be another virus-cum zombie book." (not that I wouldn't enjoy it, I just have a TON in my collection that I haven't even gotten to yet, whenever Nick tells me there's a new book out of his it goes to the top of my stack.)

Small SPOILER ahead

Oh they don't get back up again after being killed, ok, I'm with you I'm with you now. Nicholas has a way to write action where you feel the terror, excitement, adrenaline as if you were there, as if you were part of crowd. I can't read his books before bed, one because I want to keep reading, two because I'm amped up from adrenaline.
This book follows a delta force team called Ghost, on a simple HVT extraction that quickly changes to a get the hell out of dodge mission. After discovering what they are dealing with the world starts to go to the dogs, so to speak. We are quickly approaching an extinction level event, and as Nick has a way of doing, he's brought together a team that will have to fight to survive and help each other, to help the world.
The harrowing evacuation of one of the doctors from the CDC in Atlanta, literally had me tensed up. I was flying through the story so fast I had to stop myself to make sure I read that correctly. You'll find yourself holding your breath until the action is over and not even realizing it until you breathe out.
Nick still has a way of creating characters that are real, people that you care about, could be friends with, could love, and even some you can hate. You become attached to his characters, but that's a dangerous thing to do in Sansbury's world. No one's safe in his novels, not even the hero. If you care to check back here when I've finished the book, please do, if you are like, 'this sounds awesome!!' Well stop screwin around and buy it man, it's a great book, that's going to be a great series.

Nick if you read this, like I always say man. Stay true to who you are as an author and artist. Don't let people change you, we love your work for what it is, and exactly how you write it.

This is an enjoyable end-of-the-world zombie-esque outbreak book. Its full of action and suspense. The "zombies" are actually mutated humans which is rather fun as they are more dangerous than the usual shambling reanimated corpse.

It switches between the views of the two main characters one a doctor and the other a military person who's in the thick of it. I really liked the pace of the book, there's plenty of action moments but also adds the (usually) slower pace of the doctors view on the outbreak from the lab.

I'm sure there are plenty of issues with the science which is mentioned in this however as I am not an expert in anyway this didn't bother me much.

The romance between characters does feel slightly forced and unnecessary to me. Just felt like the author thought ah the main characters are male and female they must end up attracted to each other. I think the mutual trust and worry for each other well was nice but didnt need to progress from there necessarily.

I'd recommend this book as an enjoyable zombie/end-the-world easy read.
