A spectacular work of investigative journalism. Reporter Ronan Farrow (estranged son of director Woody Allen) dives deep into the throes of the networks of corruption and power that wealthy men in the entertainment industry have woven. This book focuses primarily on Harvey Weinstein and the work that led up to his exposure as a serial abuser of women in Hollywood, but Farrow also touches on men like Matt Lauer and Donald Trump.

It’s crazy to read about the scope and reach of Weinstein’s power and how everyone in the industry knew what he was but were too afraid to speak out against him. Not only that, but the multiple women that did speak out were silenced with money or intimidation. While reading there were many times where I was in disbelief that stuff like this actually happened in real life—things like spies from foreign countries, crooked and backstabbing lawyers, whole corporations, including every single employee, controlled by select few men at the top. You can tell exactly how much work Farrow put into reporting and uncovering the truth. He was so persistent in getting only the facts, backed by concrete evidence and multiple sources. He cared about the actual issues and the actual women who were survivors of the abuse and harassment. This book made me so angry, but it was gratifying to see at least one of these repugnant men brought to justice.

It had potential but Ronan’s writing style was not it! I listened to the audio and the voicing and accents he uses were so distracting and annoying. The story itself was well researched and chilling as the information is heartbreaking but it was told in a disjointed way that had me losing interest. Too many details, too many names, just not what I wanted from this book

Humans are the worst. Except for the good ones and thank goodness for the good ones, like Ronan Farrow. NBC should be burned to the ground for the role they played in letting powerful, wealthy men get away with the sexual assault of countless women. If you want to understand better why the victims didn’t report their assaults read Know My Name by Chantel Miller. Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, and Matt Lauer knew how to manipulate these women into submission and these men were protected the whole time. Shame on them and shame on the ones who stood by (in the name of profits and ratings) and let them ruin these women’s lives. May light be shed on all those who play in the dark.

It took a lot of courage for the women to come forward and for Ronan to uncover all of the lies and horrible actions by men with power. This was a good listen. One thing Ronan Farrow is going to have is RECEIPTS before he ever puts anything damning out there about someone. People are just mad because their faves are rapists.

Gripping and hard to put down. While I expected to be more angry, a sad resignation filled my heart by the end. I guess I feel hopeful somehow that I can really only attribute to the author since reality doesn’t necessarily support that....

This book is terrifying-spies, sexual assault, gaslighting, abuse of power, it all seems like this should be fiction. It is a page turner and I spent a lot of my time afraid for these women that were coming forward, frustrated at the system of abuse that allowed this to happen, and anger at all the people that stood by. Farrow is a talented journalist and the world needs more people like him, unafraid to find and expose the truth.
