Coraline shivered. She preferred the other mother to have a location: if she were nowhere, then she could be anywhere.

Well, this was deviating slightly more from the movie than I thought it would.
It was very interesting to see how the story would evolve without Wybie existing and the cat seemingly taking on his role as Coraline's companion.
I really enjoyed the darker tone of the book's world, with Coraline's character being way less annoying and loud than in the movie. She was more pleasant this way. And the extra scenes that the movie didn't include were quite interesting as well. However, with Coraline's more enjoyable personality and the book's imagery being more terrifying (to me, thats a good thing), the movie shows more emotions, making the world and characters feel more alive, which I felt was lacking in the book. Both mediums have their positives and negatives.
With that said, I have to say that I, to no one's surprise, actually still prefer the book over the movie. Coraline was an interesting adventure.

This was all sorts of spooky fun. I would've been terrified if I had read this as a kid. I think Coraline is such a well written kid and I thought there were a lot of positive messages here.

One of my favorites as a kid, and still excellent now. Creepy, humorous, with wonderfully spooky illustrations. Neil Gaiman can be hit or miss for me, but this is a gem.

I hear Neil Gaiman wrote this book because he wanted kids to know its ok to be scared sometimes. Coraline is a very brave character and although she is alone and frightened she overcomes the fear. I like the message of this story and think it's a great book to teach children about the horror genre! Because there's fun in being a little scared sometimes.
Also his writing style is great I really got uncanny vibes from the "other mother" she was so creepy!
