Very very cute for a YA novel. Loved the characters.

This was a really cute book.

Our main character was nice, but sometimes I just wanted to hit her on her head to get her sense back.

I didn't like her mom. She hid too many things, she was never happy with her daughter (and in the store, if her daughter listened to her mom and it didn't work, she would blame her own kid, not say it was her own advice). And there were more things.

I loved the love interests. Mason was really interesting, as was our rich boy Xander.

I do wish it had multiple POVs, it would have been fun to see what Xander was thinking. :)

The career days they both held were fun to read. They really tried a lot of jobs and I am wondering if in the end they found out what they both wanted to do.

In al, I would recommend this book to everyone. :) It has lots of romance, but also some real life problems. But it is all happy ending, so be sure to read it. :)

As with the other times I've read West, I find myself engaged, and entertained. And I certainly think that YA contemporary is where her niche is, but there were a few weaknesses in this book that kept me from giving it a flat-out five.
The MC was interesting, and West did a good job of skating the line between wracked by fear and letting herself heal. She also did great work with Xander's character, making him at times easy to read and at others difficult to figure out. As usual, West's character work is great.
And who doesn't love the rich boy/ poor girl trope? The Cinderella story is a longtime fave for a reason. Even the twist in this book was a welcome one.
Where I've noticed West tends to have a hard time is in the details. Like... where did her mom really get the money from? What was going on with the money-lending dude? How were her grandparents so cool now but so awful 17 years previous?
The details are so vague and the ending is annoyingly open-ended, like with no resolution whatsoever, that it felt half-finished by the time I got to the end of it. The love blossomed a little too quickly for my taste, too, but everyone is different in how quickly they fall for each other, so I won't gripe too much about that.

I look forward to more books by West, but I hope I see some skill growth along with it.

"'Wait, we're getting shoes here? I don't know if I can wear shoes other people have worn.'
'I think you just made a philosophical statement.'"

I really want to give this book 4 stars. I really, really do. Unfortunately, as can you see, I’ve given it three. Why? Because I almost put it down within the first 25 pages.

For some reason, I find Kasie West’s writing extremely monotonous. I don’t know what about it comes across like this, but the narration lacks life for me. Having scrolled through the Goodreads reviews, it seems that I’m mostly alone in this. There are tons of five-star reviews ranting and raving about Kasie West and the adorableness of this book.

And that’s the thing. I did find this book absolutely adorable. I LOVED the romance between Caymen and Xander. As long as Xander was around, I was engaged and giggling and smiling at their banter. As soon as Caymen wasn’t sassing him, I was bored. There was some dialogue in there that I found absolutely pointless, like introductions. Why do we need, “Mason, this is Xander. Xander, Mason”? It just felt unnecessary and made me want to put the book down, but then it would be redeemed by the cute back-and-forths between our mains. I was feeling very hot-and-cold throughout the entire novel, though the beginning was worse than the end. At around 250 pages, I realized I was really enjoying myself, but mostly because Xander and Caymen were being cute.

And then there’s the issue of character depth. All of the characters, including Caymen and Xander, felt 2D to me rather than 3D. I wanted more. Their personalities weren’t leaping off the page for me, and I had trouble visualizing them. I was reading their actions, but was lacking the tiny details of movements and facial expressions that make what’s happening on a page so real in my head. The writing style just didn’t work for me, but the story certainly did. And the sass. I do love sass, and Caymen is one of the sassiest.

That’s about all I have to say concerning The Distance Between Us. It was cute and funny. I read it in about three hours. I’m not sure I’m a fan of Kasie West, but I’m definitely a fan of Caymen and Xander. A short and sweet review for a short and sweet book.

4.5*

four freaking stars. okay, wasn't expecting myself to actually like this. honestly ive been thinking of that from every book ive read this week. but holy shit did i love this book. it was make in 2013, and its a poor girl rich guy book, so the bar was pretty low. but... color me impressed (that was so gross why did i say that). i expected messy buns, misogyny, and one direction cameos, not giggles and laughing OUT LOUD.

don't let the wattpad cover fool you.. this books actually worth ur time. i loved xander, he was so cute, and i actually ranted about this book mid-reading to my mom and little sister (granted they count give less of a shit). and caymen????? i feel in love. she was so funny i think she's one of my favorite heroines ive read this year. idk her dry humor matches mine so bad, i read some of the book to my little sister and she was like "nicole you've literally done that exact thing i hate u" and i was like... yeah....

anyways, yeah this book was actually way cuter than i thought, plus it was a fast read. im gonna read the second one, since that was the one that my friend actually told me to read.
