This was an absolutely fun read. I love the quirk and originality of each of the characters, and boozy Mother Goose is still my favorite. Add to that a bridezilla version of Little Red, pregnancy hormone-addled Goldilocks, always shouting Robin Hood, highly annoying Lost Boys, immature Peter Pan, and a manipulative evil goat witch, and this cast of characters was golden.
Chris is continuing to grow as a writer, and with each book his ability to weave complex plots and conflicts gets better and better. Characters are introduced by action and context instead of simply talking about their life stories. Obstacles are believable and difficult and not so easily overcome. The conflict at many times becomes emotionally based instead of just rushing to find elements for a spell or enchantment; the relationships feel deeper and more meaningful. And overall, things have gotten a bit darker and characters are becoming a bit more sinister. The only thing I hated about this book was the cliffhanger. It felt much less resolved than any of the other books in the series and really seemed like one book was split in half. I'm glad I waited until the fifth book was released to read this one.

"But living without a heart means you cannot feel at all...It may spare you from grief, or loneliness, or misery, or longing, or fear-but you do not enjoy, or laugh, or excite, or love. And one who cannot love is just an object."
Rereading this and I feel like this book and the past book had pretty much been filler books. Maybe? I don't know. I guess I'm realizing why I'm not remembering a lot that happened in the books from the 3rd one on. I did like a few things out of all of this. I loved Alex's growth and her relationship in this book, and I wanted more of it. I just didn't love this one. It was pretty boring. Or not boring, but very stand still. Yeah, they moved between worlds, but it still was very stand still.

Chris Colfer really hit his stride in this book. I'm enjoying this series more and more.
i really liked the concept of having the ability to go to your favorite fictional world and experience everything you read and the reason why fairy godmother did it for his son is so emotional. :(

While I loved that we started to explore magic worlds besides the one that the Brother Grimms created (like Oz, Neverland or Camelot), this also meant that there were lots of introductions and descriptions, and that made the book feel a bit like a filler.
Plus, including Emmerich and Bree with their own chapters where little to nothing happenend (I mean, some stuff did happen but it was unfolding just super slow), took away the build-up of suspension for me.
Overall, I will of course continue with this series as I am very invested in the story of Alex and Connor, and the massive cliffhanger at the end of book 4 definitely kept me hooked. But so far, this was the weakest book of the series for me (kind of a classic "middle book syndrome case).
