What a story!
Stunning.... I have just finished reading Bridge of Clay. Full of love and sorrow, courage and resolve. I loved everything about it, especially the Australian-ness of it.

This heavy book about five brothers started off promising but besides the backstory of their deceased mother I found a lot of the story laboured and seemingly endless. I just couldn't find myself engaged enough to care about the characters or through their story. A very unsatisfying read.

I love the family dynamic in this book so so so much. I can totally tell that Markus Zusak put some of himself into this book and I just love it.
It goes without saying that the writing was spectacular. The style took a little getting used to, but it was worth it in the end. The unique interpretation of timelines kept me intrigued the entire time.

Początek był bardzo ciężki, nie jest to lekka obyczajówka. Nie mamy żadnego wprowadzenia, nie wiemy kto jest kim, kto jest narratorem, składnia zdań jest specyficzna (co na początku utrudnia czytanie), był moment że myślałam że postać psa to człowiek! Istny chaos!
Aż do, mniej więcej, trzydziestej strony...
Jest to opowieść o rodzinie, a w szczególności o matce, ojcu i jednym z piątki braci. Poznajemy ich losy "przed nimi" i "po nich", skaczemy między latami, nic nie jest chronologiczne, ale zupełnie nie psuje to odbioru. Momentami nie wiemy ile lat mają bohaterzy, gdy dana rzecz się dzieje, ale to nie ma znaczenia. Im głębiej wchodzimy w losy i w życie rodziny, tym wszystko staje się bardziej klarowne i czujemy większą więź z nimi.
Przy ostatnich stronach, wszystkie puzzle wchodzą na swoje miejsce i rozumiemy to, czego nie mogliśmy zrozumieć na początku.
Zostanie ze mną na długo.

The pacing & segways into each chapter took some getting used to. Picking up the book was hard, no matter when I put it down, but once I got a few pages in again, I didn't want to stop.
With the emotions from this book, I'm kind of glad that all the really sad parts are alluded to or flat out stated before the events where they're actually described. It gave me a buffer & a chance to prepare.
