Beautiful, emotional, quirky.
The pacing & segways into each chapter took some getting used to. Picking up the book was hard, no matter when I put it down, but once I got a few pages in again, I didn't want to stop.
With the emotions from this book, I'm kind of glad that all the really sad parts are alluded to or flat out stated before the events where they're actually described. It gave me a buffer & a chance to prepare.

An incredible slow-burn of a novel, quiet and moving and melancholic, and the language as always is beautiful and detailed and unlike anything I've read before. Not the kind of story I usually go for, but definitely worth the wait <3

Did not finish. Putting this down for now as I found it extremely disappointing. Found the story hard to follow as it jumps around in time and perspective. I loved his other two books, especially The Messenger but I don’t feel as drawn into the character’s world here.
I did not finish this book at this time. I may try again at some point in the future, but I cannot get into it at all. I know I should probably keep reading to understand what's going on, but I just can't find the motivation. I also know I shouldn't judge a book based on another book by the same author, but it's difficult not to when you loved the previous book and the new book doesn't live up to the hype for you. I have too many other books to read to continue a book as long as this one when I can't get into it after more than 100 pages. It's not for me at this time.

A slow-starter for me, but suddenly halfway through when I realised I was in love with the book, all the information and character development from the start was worth the wait. Real and raw and devastating happiness.
