It's more a 2.5/5 for me ... but Goodreads doesn't do half star haha

I am really disappointed in this book, I had it for ages now and thought it was time to read it ...
It was complicated to get into, the planets, places, characters, objects and plants names were confusing sometimes...

The weirdest part ... I want to know how it ends !! I truly do ... but I don't care about the characters, weather they live or die won't affect me AT ALL ... Maybe I'll just read a recap about the second book on internet ... I don't know yet.

Please read it haha I want to talk about this book and see if I am alone in this =)

Quite boring but I powered through. It gets more interesting eventually, but not by much. The attempt to build interest at the end to link to a sequel was transparent and frankly, I couldn't be less interested. Wouldn't recommend this book.
fast-paced

No 🌶 YA.

This book took me by surprise because I normally don’t read any sci-fi. Although this was very fast paced, the narration switch between Arkos and Seera helped. Obviously having Austin Butler reading Arkos helped ;) I just hope by the time I read the second one I will have not confused any characters

I´m not sure about this book hence the 3s rating. I want to try out a new format for this review so let´s go on.

The story
Overall, I liked it. The problem really is the pacing. This book moves so slowly!
Of course, it is not something you haven't seen before. Akos wants to save his brother, Cyra is mainly struggling with her identity. She is torn between the girl she wants to be and the one she is supposed to be - quite a common trope used in YA. And you wouldn´t have guessed, there is also a rebellion.
But combined with the character´s personalities and the worldbuilding it was still interesting and creative enough to keep me entertained. Sometimes you just need something classically YA.

The worldbuilding
Overall, I liked it. It´s pretty sci-fi-esk and I love space in general. The problem was just that because the book is so slow-paced you have much time to wonder and question the worldbuilding. Sometimes I wanted more information, sometimes less. The great unanswered question for me was definitely: what is this universe outside of Thuve like? We get hints but nothing really concrete...
The Shotet culture was very interesting to me. You can say what you want, but I don´t know another YA book that represents this kind of lifestyle.

The characters
Overall, I enjoyed them. I just noticed some inconsistencies throughout the book. If I´m not mistaken the two protagonists are 16 years old and at the beginning of this book, I thought their behaviour to be age-appropriate. But this changed throughout the novel. Why are they suddenly so grown-up? They make hard decisions with ease, they do what has to be done. Sometimes they were conflicted and sometimes they weren´t. This book is a bit confusing at times.

I think you see the common ground. Overall I enjoyed this book, but I had my issues. So I´ll settle on a 3,5s rating.
Furthermore, I want to give the author credits for her writing style (because I think it improved since the Divergent- series) and I want to discuss three more aspects.

The romance
Don´t call me crazy, but I somehow shipped Akos and Jorek for no special reason. I mean, they never interact in any romantic way, but I saw potential.
I suppose I´m fine with Cyra/Akos too and they had nice moments together, but it won´t become my favourite romance ever.

The secondary characters
It was sometimes difficult to remember who is who and especially what each one´s current gift is, but I surprisingly really liked all of the secondary characters. Everyone had a background and their motives for doing what they did. And I´m keen to see more of Akos` family in the sequel. (Yes, I think I want to read the sequel.)

The controversy
I debated whether I should mention it at all. There are people out there who think I´m not allowed to have an opinion on the matter because I´m white, privileged and not affected by any racist remarks. I just wanted to say that for me personally, I couldn´t find any racistic tendencies in this work of fiction .
Concerning the handling of the topic "chronic pain", I also don´t think it´s disrespectful. It is mentioned in the acknowledgement that Veronica Roth was inspired by women with chronic pain. I wonder if people who criticise this aspect know this.

Pretty good. To much worldbuilding, but the characters were good. The finale was not what i wanted.

A while ago, I finished reading Carve the Mark, by Veronica Roth! The anticipation was quite high for this book, as you probably know. So the Young Adult Dome group and I decided to all read the book together.

These ideas and opinions are my own, though.

Note: I understand that there are many issues that have been brought to light considering Carve the Mark, notably by Justina Ireland. I do understand that this may affect people and dissuade people from reading the book. Bloggers are even changing their Goodreads rating of the book because of it. However, this issue will not be the center of my review - I will keep it as I usually do.

So. Carve the Mark. I can't really figure out if I liked it or not, to be completely honest. I liked the characters, but I found the world building to be rushed and messy. I honestly feel like I have to read it again to understand the world everything was happening in.

See, you have these planets in this Galaxy. Different planets have different people and different environments. These planets interact from time to time and people visit each other and the peoples mix and mingle. Between these planets, we have some kind of life force thing called the Current that is somehow a part of the people and gives them powers that reflect their personality but is also something in the universe that people can go visit.

To be fair I'd like a novella just explaining this universe and what's going on.

So, since I didn't understand the world-building, I stuck to concentrating on character development and the plot, which itself was very good! The characters imagined by Roth were colorful and intriguing. I enjoyed how she took the time to have two different points of view between Akos (who is just too sweet!) and Cyra, although I found it strange how Cyra's passages were in the first person while Akos's were in the third.

Akos is a very sweet character, but his character developed in a way I didn't like so much (very personally). He started off sweet and shy and kind, and ended up... buff? Is that the right word? He had fears and he never liked the idea of hurting people but I feel like there was a tipping point at which he was suddenly out of character, in my opinion. His Currentgift was being able to stop the current in other people - basically to hide their abilities. He has a complex family situation that leaves him quite introverted and protective.

Cyra is the opposite - she is all fire and can inflict pain with the slightest touch. She is ready to kill for what she believes in and rarely lets people stand in her way. She, unlike Akos, suffers from many internal problems that she hides from the world. I feel like they balance each other quite well!

Although I feel like the worldmaking was rushed and the story was quite complex, I still enjoyed reading this! I'm giving it a 3/5 feathers :)

SpoilerI enjoyed this book. It started off a little slow. The first section with Akos's point of view was a little hard to follow. I had to keep going back a few pages to find information I missed. I'm not sure if it was because my mind kept drifting. But when i did look back, the answers to my questions where there. Reading form Cyra's point of view was a lot easier to follow in the first person point of view. I am convinced that there is a reason that one is in first person and one is third. I wish the two points of view went back and forth through the whole book and not just the second half. I really wish there was a pronunciation guide, like these are obviously different words and we got a glossary but why not add how to pronounce them? The second half of the book was a lot more interesting and faster paced. More characters were introduced, but i think there is still a lot of opportunity to flesh them out.

The world building could have been flushed out a bit more. In the beginning it was a little unclear that they were on a frost planet. Same with Armoured Ones. I thought they were people until we encountered one in like the last chapter of the book. We were introduced to them on like page 88, and didn't get a full description to my knowledge of what they were till the end of the book.

I think Veronica did well with the romance in the book. I mean it was pretty obvious that they were going to fall in love with each other. But it took the whole book for the relationship to develop and the pace felt right.

There were a lot of characters that died that didn't really effect me. I felt like we should of had more time with them so that their deaths were a little bit more significant.

Akos's- He is interesting. In the first section that followed his point of view I got the sense that he was small and weak. I was also confused at what age he was during that cuz that wasnt clear as well. And then he comes back tough and a goo fighter. It would have been nice to have his point of view while he was training in Shotet, or at least have flash backs. Instead of him just showing up and being a good fighter and also like shy? I like the plot of him staying in Shotet so he could get his brother out, but I wish that relationship was build more. Also if he Shotet blood in im, i think he might not be thuve and his fate isnt his.
Cyra- I feel like we needed to see her be more savage in the beginning. We met her almost as soon as she meets Akos, and there wasnt really any time with her just being on her own. So I feel like the character arch kinda happened right away and was expected. I think i would have liked to see more of that internal struggle. I was so confused how she got skinned at the end by Ryzek until the scene where they put the sliver skin on her. but the visual with that was really cool. Now that we know shes not noavek, I think shes thuve and her and Akos have actually been switched and their fates is each other's.
