Seeing Gender

Iris Gottlieb

4.25 AVERAGE

Cute illustrations. A good primer--even though nothing was new to me, it probably would be to a lot of people. A couple of historical inaccuracies that made me rate it a bit lower.

Honestly, as someone who is involved with the queer community and who has a lot of prior knowledge of issues and theories about gender and sexuality and the intersection of other identities, this was kind of boring to get through.

HOWever. I think this would be a valuable resource for anyone who is less familiar with the community and wants something of a primer. The illustrations throughout break up each section into small one- and two-page sections that make it feel accessible and allow you to read and absorb the information quickly. LGBTQ+ communities can be kind of hard to represent in an overview because we're still in the process of finding new identities and theories and ways to talk about ourselves, but all the information here is generally up to date with where we are in 2019, which I'm extremely grateful for. Someone who needed an intro into the way we understand gender today could definitely find what they're looking for here.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of this book!
This book is packed with information about all aspects of gender. Sometimes I found myself wondering who the intended audience was, but this note in Gottlieb's acknowledgements is probably the best guide: "This book was made entirely from a desire to reach people in whatever moment they're in to feel connection or understanding" because for some, most of the information in this book will be enlightening. For others, only certain parts. Towards the end, when Gottlieb shared her story and then gave a surgery timeline, I did wonder if that could have been the focal point of the book - a memoir with surrounding analysis of gender. Overall, I like the readability of this book and because of that and the comprehensive nature of it, would recommend to others!

This is great for people that are interested in gender and want to understand it better. The chapters/sections are short and to the point and always accompanied by a related illustration. It feels a bit like a picture book for adults. The last few sections are very personal to the author, talking about their experience with gender and sexuality. It took me awhile to read only because I would read a little bit at a time while reading other books.

This is a beautiful, beautiful book. Definitely looking for more from this author and the foreword writer.

Meredith was recently part of a panel called Disrupting Literary Hegemony: Trans and Nonbinary Author Spotlight Confirmation, which was fantastic! (Check YouTube for the full recording.)

I really appreciate the intend of the book, and fully applaud the awesome work in explaining as clearly and simply as possible the many variations of genders, sexes, and sexualities. It's much needed; many people around me are not even aware of the existence of non-binary people and don't understand what it means and implies. However I feel like the author tries to cover too much and overreach sometimes by adding race to the equation. It sometimes reads as a manual of how to not be a discriminatory individual, which is absolutely legit in and by itself, but is not necessarily the original goal of the author. Still, a useful guide to understand and talk more accurately of the complexities of what it means to live in a human body.

I think everyone should be prescribed this book. It's sensitive, straightforward, informative, welcoming and fascinating. It's also very aesthetically pleasing as it's filled with beautiful illustrations; a great "coffee table book", not just to show off but one that you should actually read.

3.5

a brief informative illustrated book about a variety of issues centered mostly (but not exclusively) around gender and how it affects society. It's quite good and there were many interesting facts but i don't think it is great for total beginners. I'd love to have it as a cofee-table book.
