A new Penderwick book is here!! I have waited soooooooooooooo long and it did not disappoint. The 3 older girls are in college and high school so they are not in the picture much - although they have impacts on the story. This is mostly Batty's story. Ms. Birdsall packs a couple of emotional wallops. I was crying by page 8 but the feeling of hope and happiness wins out. Your cheeks will hurt from smiling. Now to wait another 3 years for the 5th (and last) book in the series.

All Penderwick books are absolutely delightful!

Batty has been my favourite character since the beginning of this series so I was thrilled that this 4th book finally focused on her. Make sure to have tissues on hand for this one..!

Sweet, but featured a major time jump from the last three books. Batty is the main character, and the three older sisters are peripheral, which gives it a different flavor. Still worth reading if you are already invested in the series! But I felt much less attached to this installment of the Penderwick saga.

Ok this is an example of a time jump done Very Well. I was excited and apprehensive about this one, since I knew I wasn't going to get the Skye and Jane perspectives, and they are my favorite sisters. (Especially Skye!) But I was really pleasantly surprised that the books worked really well with just Batty and Ben, and I liked how the older sisters weren't gone completely, we saw them a lot and their personalities and developments shone through even if they weren't the main focus. I know that they were too old for the middle grade readers that Birdsall is writing for, and me reading this at age 16 is not exactly in that age range.

**some spoilers!**

But the heartbreaking plot line with Skye and Batty???????? Incredible, and incredibly sad! I cried every time I reread it. Amazing that she can write such a dark story into a children's book and still have it be poignant and not inappropriate.

This one was a touch heavier than the last 3 have been. Kids and I still enjoyed it though.

I love these sweet books. Be prepared, this one is really sad!
