I wish I lived on Gardam Street. I am 44 and just lost my own mom, so Batty's trials really
hit me in the feels. I know a lot of the other reviews are bemoaning the lack of the other sisters in this book, but I feel this story was important to tell, IMHO as a mom and teacher. I thought the kids were all aged-up very well and I loved reading about this blended family. Growing up is hard, but change is okay, and that's the message here.

I think this is my favorite of the Penderwicks - Batty is such a great character and made me tear up near the end. This is also a great book for exploring depression and feelings and starting a discussion about these topics.

I didn't listen to my mother and I read this one during a slow time at work and cried and cried. Maybe no one noticed? I loved it. I would do anything for my girl Batty.

This one is just as wonderful as the others but it deals with some heartbreaking events.

Spoilers:
While we don't witness the loss of Hound, we see the heartache in the aftermath. There is also a whole event surrounding deep pain over the death of their mother, which happened before the first book takes place.

I love the Penderwicks! The whole family is wonderful fun. The books have an old fashioned feel as if they were taking place in the 1930's or 40's, and you have just discovered a new series by Elizabeth Enright. The characters are all very much individuals, the stories are great.

Mr. Penderwick who remarried at the end of an earlier book (the Penderwicks birth mother died of cancer shortly after the fourth daughter Batty was born, before the series starts), The family has happily adjusted to Iantha their new mother, Ben their adopted brother, and now two year old Lydia is a part of the family. The oldest daughter Rosalynd is in college, and Jane and Skye are teens, so most of the action centers on the younger children Batty (now in fifth grade, Ben (second grade) and two year old Lydia,

It's spring and Batty is looking forward to her birthday and seeing family friends. She is discovering a deeper love for music, and is excited to share her talents with her family. An overheard conversation causes her to doubt herself, and leaves Batty feeling sad until she can finally talk to her family.
