I love a darker, uncomfortable narrative, a deeply flawed heroine that you can empathize with, a whodunnit that doesn't follow the cops around. Check, check, check.
I agree with many of the reviews that the ending was pretty easy to guess at chapter 17. That being said, I thought the writing was interesting enough and fast enough to get through that it was worth finishing.

I still want to know why Jacqueline dragged Laine into this nonsense and HOW did Laine feel ok enough with her to continue a positive relationship? She knew damn well what happened to her kid but talked her into going on TV anyway for what reason? To make her husband sweat more?blankeechats's review against another edition

This one is dark, you guys.
Laine was kidnapped when she was ten years old. As a 23 year old she still bears the scars from being chained up. And now, 13 years later, another girl is missing. One who is the same age, has the same look, and under the same circumstances.

One of my favorite books of all time! The characters were relatable, it was a fast read, and a not random but also not predictable plot twist!

I’m feeling kind of mixed with this one. I was interested enough to want to keep reading. It was definitely a page turner. Fast and easy read.
The story was just a bit odd though. Like not fully fledged. There were storylines that would just kind of fade with no real explanation or follow-up. It was all a bit fuzzy. The main character was also very frustrating to follow. Constantly making things harder on herself, and making one bad decision after another. I get that she’s supposed to be broken and flawed, but if she had ever just spoken her thoughts out loud once, things wouldn’t have had to unfold the way they did. I get kind of annoyed by that character ‘technique’. It’s an easy substitute for a more developed plot.
I can see how this is the work of a first time author. I think with more time and experience, some of these criticisms would be resolved.
