content warnings: profanity, murder, gore, graphic medical “procedures,” brief almost-sex scene, objectification of women

This was the first Pendergast book that I finished (I started Relic last year and ended up putting it down.) It was a pretty fun read, overall it kept my attention and I thought Pendergast was a good character.
I listened to the audiobook and I do think it could have benefitted from being abridged a bit. The story dragged a little at parts. But overall this was a fun one, and I may pick up the next in the series at some point later on.

Spine-tingling, gruesome, with lots of unexpected twists and turns. I'll likely read this one again at some point...

Pretty good for a murder/mystery novel!

Captivating as always. I was proud that I solved part of it, but I didn’t solve all of it. Now I have to decide if I continue with the next Pendergast book or read the next Nora Kelly installment.

Creepy good.

As I read the final page, closed the book, and set it in front of me, I found myself at a loss for words.

Superb novel. I was so happy to have read this book. I have now become a walking AD for these authors, and I cannot wait to read more.

They are wonderful with description; they do not over-power you with nonsense, and can paint a picture with the fewest of words. Their dialogue is believable, and their characters are the most memorable to date.

Pendergast and Smithback, I await your return! ;)

4.5 Stars
So far the best in the series yet and a slight change in perspective.

Where Pendergast in the previous books mainly appeared as described by one of the supporting characters, we now get real 1. person narrative from him and some insight into his past which suits the story.

We continue the well know formula of introducing a new lead protagonist from the museum mixed with reelection to Smithback as our annoying and somewhat likeable reporter.

so nice to know there's plenty more novels in the series

Listened to audio. Pretty good.

The writing isn't great and the characters are pretty flat, however, the story is interesting and it's a quick read. It's not a great work of literature but it's a nice way to spend an afternoon.
