You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty
Akwaeke Emezi
Publishing Date: May 24, 2022
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🎧 Narrator: Bahni Turpin 🎧
This is a complex book that is hard for me to really wrap my feelings and thoughts around.
I really loved the female empowerment throughout. Feyi was unapologetic, strong, and confident in her choices. She went after what she wanted but was thoughtful and considerate, despite a complicated choice. I loved that she was not about to take any nonsense from the men in this book. She didn’t owe anyone anything and she lets them know it.
I also thought the exploration of grief was absolutely stunning. These moments were tender and emotional and just really beautifully done.
The things that didn’t work for me… the beginning of the book started with a bang (literally 🔥) and I found it jarring. I do feel like the writing got better and better as the book went along. Emezi found their flow and you could feel it. I really struggled with the men in this book though. Maybe that was the point? But there are two main male characters and both of them were seriously ick to me in different ways.
This was a very sensual and intimate story. It has great queer and diverse representation. Female empowerment will always be a win for me in a book. I know Feyi’s character has gotten a bad rap for choices made, but for me it was the men who need to be looked at, not her.
🎧 Bahni Turpin’s narration was really lovely!

A beautiful, special book. I love how Emezi writes; that has remained unchanged. That said, I'm not a romance novel person, and compared to other things they've written, this wasn't my thing. Even if we leave that aside for a moment, I found the central romance unconvincing, unbalanced, and (if there were to be a sequel that took place in real life) destined for doom

I'm very torn about this book. The writing style is beautiful, and it's definitely more of a literary fiction rather than a romance, so i see the broader appeal, but this book has a curveball that isn't in the synopsis and the whole thing feels a little off because of it. There's some very grey area cheating that I wasn't super comfortable.
Basically... all these characters need a good therapist instead of a bed.

This was messy as hell.
I felt for Feyi, and I really liked how she worked through her grief in her artwork. And Joy, she was an absolute gem. She was a hilarious, encouraged foolishness, but also called out Feyi when she was wrong.
This book is scandolous, but I was conviced that not only was the scandal entertaining, but it was needed.
Being alive is messy. Choosing yourself is healing.

It made me cry at some points, and made me laugh at others. It also handles grief and love and being alive in a way that I like.
